USB sticks

Hi I was wondering can you use normal usb sticks for downloading content from Xbox live or does it have to be an Xbox branded one or hard drive? Thanks

For profiles and game saves, any USB pen drive above 4GB is fine, not necessarily one of the XBox360 branded ones.
For most downloadable content, considering the large file size, an XBox360 formatted hard drive is usually required

Thanks, my son has the 4gb Xbox he's downloaded a game but to play it he gets a message saying to connect an external hard drive so would a USB stick be ok for this or not?

Yes, you can use a USB stick up to 16gb in size to play games from, either retail (you can install direct from the disk to the USB stick) or XBLA/Games on Demand. Everything is playable so long as it falls under the 16gb limit.

The only issue is not all USB sticks will pass the required speed test from the 360. I have a few Verbatim 16gb sticks and they work well if that helps, not entirely sure of the requirements but I would think most modern branded sticks will be ok.

It's worth considering getting a HDD for your sons Xbox. It's amazing how much space can be taken up with demo's and DLC for games and that way he can also install the games he has or buys

I was going to post a similar suggestion. In addition to what XxBlaKOuTZxX just said ... there are two options you
could take ... the easiest but pricey way is by getting an official XBox360 branded 250GB hard drive from any
decent retailer such as Amazon or eBuyer, or a cheaper method that requires a bit of extra work.

The official 250GB hard drive accessory costs around £60, and is pre-set to work "out of the box" so to speak.

The other method is to purchase a standalone 250GB hard drive for around £30, but requires a bit of hacking to
install the XBox360 security codes, and only certain models of hard drive are supported. There are step by
step guides available online that tell you exactly what type of hard drive to buy and how to set it up.

If you don't want to go to all that fuss, and you don't mind paying a bit over the odds, get the official accessory.
If you're adventurous, and don't mind getting a bit technical, then by all means go for the second option.
