Over heating you say? see after about 20 or 25 minutes of play time on it. Let a small child touch the back of it, see what kind of reaction they give - probably one of crying. As it is damn hot, as are the discs when you bring them out.

It seems as of the PS3 is going to have a bumpy ride at the start. When X Box first launched I found it a bulky as hell console and didn't quite like it but it has survived and I find it a good console at present. The same could happen to PS3, it could do ok in a couple of years time, but then again it might not succeed.

Although PS3 will not be able to get it this year, I guess Japan and the USA are good testing grounds to determine the fate of PS3. At this moment it is unclear how Sony will fare in the Next Gen console war.

So long Sony (as a hardware developer). They are gonna have it seriously hard to keep fans interested in the PS3.
Graphically, 360 is gonna be just as good as PS3 and Wii is totally different so apart from a few exclusives, which can change very quickly, there is little reason to remain keen on getting a PS3 when the 360 and Wii are out there.
I've never had any interest in a PS3 but I can see people that are leaving it, although Japan may be their only hope for sucess now.

Many people are not particularly well informed, as such they will see the PS3 simply as the successor to the PS2. There still exist people who think hardware wise PS2 is better than xbox, clearly untrue and thinking there are no games for xbox, not as many as ps2 but pro evo is definitely on xbox.

The PS3 will be successful in that it will be profitable, it is extremely likely that it won't be as successful as PS2. I think this round we may see all three achieving a degree of success brought by a lower market share by sony.

Nintendo will keep being profitable and famous as the innovative one, Sony will continue to ride on the back of previous consoles and Microsoft can recoup money through micropayments, accessories and it is glad to have this successful beachhead into living room media organisation, a head start on Apple iTV which is sadly HD-only (only has HDMI and component). Once Vista is out and people start buying it and maximise compatibility with 360 and movie downloads take off it is much better for 360.

Who could argue that long-term streamed H.263 and H.264 video content is the future rather than DVDs and interest in HD DVD and Bluray is lacklustre at best among non-early adopters I think because the benefits are much less than DVD had over VHS.

The problem is that BlueRay is too soon and Sony are pushing it on us at too early a stage. In 2000 DVDs were relatively new but not in the position BlueRay is now. Putting a DVD player in each PS2 was a great idea back in 1999/2000 but now it isn't necessary just yet for BlueRay.
If a PS4 is ever made in 5ish years time, or if Sony do a Sega and bring it out in 2-3 years then the timing will be right to produce BlueRay but I feel that Sony are being too ambitious and ahead of our time with their decision to include BlueRay in their new console. It is rather similar to when Sega released the Mega CD only a few years after the Mega Drive and it completely failed as the graphics it was capable of showing, along with the ability to play music and at a far too high price (£270ish for an add-on is not good business) was just not needed by the gaming public.
Obviously PS3 is very different to Mega CD but it seems that Sony are going down the route Sega fell into and need to be very careful about what their plan is now.

lmfao @ price might be lower "wipes tears from eyes and laughs some more" (You do know that the UK is paying the most of the PS3 then anyone else? Sony knows people will pay the cost so they might aswell get as much money out of people as possible, same with all companies)

deff will be a larger range of games available obviously as the rest of the world would of been playing them for 4months by the time people get them here

The Wii is far more powerful than the Gamecube and that was £130 without a free game in 2002 so I'd say we're getting a very good deal.

This does beg the ultimate question of why do we expect equal release dates in every country when it comes to a piece of new technology launching when we know full well that will never, ever happen?

I know this is a 2006 thread but how wrong this post was. PS3 came out a few months after it then we had the whole HD DVD/Blu-ray war which we all know BR won. Since BR has gone from strength to strength and I seriously think PS3 had a massive hand in that success. BR is a hell of a lot cheaper now then at the time too so much so that a lot of my friends and I don't bother to buy DVDs anymore (unless we have no choice)

I worked at Toys R Us for the launch of the PS3. I remember leaving work at 4pm the night before it launched and there were several people queuing for their consoles. I came back at 5am the next morning and they were still there!

Yeah a lot of people I know bought a PS3 rather than a 360 based on Blu-Ray, even though now they don't really play them...

But it does seem - for a family living room console purchase anyway - the 'wisest' decision.

Most other forums have rules against digging up old threads, that have been dead for more than a few months.
I wish this forum, as big as it is, would adopt this kind of ruling. Is it not annoying when you click on a thread
you perhaps haven't seen before, only to find out that it's a few years since anyone last contributed to it!
