I like cats, and cats like me. I just hate tidying up after them, without any of the benefits.

I hear you on the spraying especially. There is nothing worse than the stench of tomcat. For the love of Gods get them snipped ASAP. We have a visiting tomcat who occasionally sprays the doorstep and door...When he's brave enough to sneak in during the night when my girls are inside!

We (my wife, and me) had grown up with dogs, but realised that with both of us working that it would be impractical to look after a dog, alone in the house all day. So, I grudgingly agreed to get a couple of cats (a couple to keep themselves company), and haven't looked back.

Our latest, a Maine Coon, is typical of the breed that's described as the doggiest of cats, a right character (the only one that I've seen play "chase", get half way down the garden, stop, and chase my wife back).

So, as with other posters - Cats... because they suit our lifestyle, and we can't be arsed walking them each day in winter.

Do you let them defecate in neighbours gardens so you dont have to provide and clean out litter trays?

How can you say this isn't cute?

Lola made a nest in the kids dressing up clothes.

Martha in her favourite sleeping position.

I should add, I also love dogs but lifestyle dictates whether its fair to keep one or not. Anyone can have cats.

LOL at Martha - How sweet!

i'm daft enough letting him sit there though
knows i'm a soft touch. He's a sweet little thing though so... there we go

licking he hubbys forehead though! that's damn funny!

another poster mentioned that you know what a dog is thinking when you look at it, where as with cats you don;t tend to - that's exactly what i get too. it could just be down to not being around cats, but i find them a lot harder to "read" than dogs.

in fact,t he first time i went round to my (now ex) boyfriends house, i was sat there stroking his housemates cat, who seemed, SEEMED, to be enjoying it, when a split second later, he decided to turn around & dig his teeth & claws into my forearm

(the same cat who they complained constantly about him messing through the house... but i'm not sure what they expected him to do when i never once saw his litter tray unoccupied by the kitchen bin )

No, we have a very large litter tray that we keep as clean as we can.

What's your point?

We have both, WHY do some 'so called' animal lovers feel the need to 'look down on' or question the reasons or motivation of others for having a pet they don't approve of?

Don't like or want a cat? GOOD don't bloody have one then.

I like both dogs and cats. But I don't have a dog because I work shifts and it would be unfair on it not to have regular walks.

Why would you want a cat? dogs seem much more fun, are usually cuter. Aren't cats boring and introverted animals?
Since you've obviously never owned one how on earth would you know?

Why do you want one when you've obviously no experiance of them? I mean, whats the point? Why not get a dog since thats obviously what you're used to? Is this some kind of social experiment?

I`m not going to say anything about dogs- I`ve never lived with one. But it still amazes me how underrated cats are. Yes, they are independent, but, if you earn their trust, they are also sensitive, loyal and loving. They have huge personalities, are intelligent...and hilarious! No, they are not boring.

Well exactly.

ETA. I prefer cats to dogs, though I don't have one as a pet. My dad used to have cats and they were great pets to have. Unfortunately, when he took up horticulture as a profession, he couldn't have a new cat, as they are very destructive in a garden, when you have tens of thousands of cuttings and it's your livelihood.

I'm a young single professional out of the house 7.30am - 11pm most days (as I rehearse/perform a lot outside of work), so I would be simply cruel to have a dog. Also I rent so am only allowed cats, not to say I don't love dogs too though

Cats are rarely boring, but a friend of ours has one that seems pretty dull.
Our Charlie is a little firecracker! When he wants to play he sits at the top of the stairs and makes little chirruping sounds. This is my cue to start chucking his mouse up to him so he can go belting after it and then hide, waiting to attack my ankles when I go asking 'where's he gone?' We then have to roar around the house until we've had enough.
His latest, greatest plaything is a piece of string which he pounces on and drags off to hide it.
The fun never ends.....

Cats are more elegant than dogs. I think it's best exemplified by their walk. Cats walk with grace, dogs lumber along with little style.

I love both cats and dogs but will always favour cats, I fnd dogs smell alot more then cats do, dogs have owners, cats have slaves - and boy is that true.

Just chuck them out and they look after themselves. They can crap in the neighbours' gardens and there's not a thing they can do do. If they complain, just tell them that cats are "free-spirits" and that the law allows them to roam free wherever they choose.

Dogs need lots of care and attention and you have to pick up their poo if anyone's around.
I think that just about sums it up.I would add that picking up poop even when there is no one around is the sign of a responsible dog owner.

I have a cat because I live alone, and work 12 hour shifts.

It wouldn't we fair, to leave a dog to fend for itself, for over 12 hours.

Dogs are very needy to me, and also I dislike the hierarchical nature of their interactions. My OH's family dog is a dopey greyhound, which is too big, too stupid and too unintelligent to be of any interest.

Mind you, I don't hate all dogs, just cats are my preference. When I have kids, I'll have a couple of cats and a lovely border collie to go with them.
