I was reading an American forum back along about this very subject. The general consensus seemed to be that the Brit and Aussie actors are much better trained and expect to work very hard while doing the role. Quite a few American stars these days have got there through nepotism and quite a few others because of looks. I don't know how much this is truth but this came from an American point of view so thought it might be interesting for the discussion here.

When comparing these "newcomers" in Hwood, it has to be pointed out, that most of the Aussie/British actors have done tons of work in their home country before going to America. Most have nearly 10 years of work already behind them, so they are hardly newcomers to the acting scene. When we compare them to the American's we have to look at American actors with the same amount of experience and training behind them. Also, it seems like the UK talents stay out of the Hwood scene, and just come around for the jobs, which is always just positive thing, if they want more work, and to be appreciated for their work.

Well there is a saying that it takes 10 years to become an overnight success, that's due to a lot of actors doing theatre and/or smaller roles before their break into main roles and becoming an opening name for a movie.

Also, British actors are normally willing to work for less than their American counterparts...
