Richard X not giving 'Some Girls' to Geri Halliwell

So most people in the industry know the story, Richard X wrote this cracking pop song Some Girls and after much wrangling decided to give it to Rachel Stevens rather than Geri Halliwell..

Geri did not take it well and threw a tantrum, locking herself in her car and barraging Richard X with letters, texts and calls for many weeks..

(He later wrote a song regarding the whole affair and Geri in general, 'Me Plus One')

Now don't get me wrong, I think Rachel Stevens did a great job with the song... her cold, lifeless vocal adds to the song's bleak underbelly.

But the video and promotion was just abhorrent to me. Richard X also famously hated what they did with the video.

I cant help thinking this awesome song would have been so much more interesting if Geri had recorded it.

If there's one thing Geri did well, that was promo and grabbing attention.

Dancing between giant inflatable legs at The Brits, anyone?

I know for a fact that Geri already had some big plans for the video, and I just think that it would have been truly huge - potentially even more global than It's Raining Men and a bit of a landmark in the pop music scene.

It's just a shame that a song with such potential turned out to be a cardboard cut-out, sterile bore.

I think they should actually get some talent and write their own songs...

Why can't someone who's good at songwriting write the songs, and then someone who's good at being a pop star promotes the songs?

But on topic, I personally really liked Some Girls at the time, even though it was a rip-off of a certain other artist (well, the instrumental at least)... I think Rachel did a fine job at it.

I didn't know Geri wanted this song. I really liked the song at the time, but not so much now for some reason. I don't know why.

I can't really imagine Geri singing this though. According to wikipedia - Girls Aloud were also considered for this song, I don't know how true that is.

As the above poster mentioned, it was clearly similar to another (much better imo) song.

I never liked the video either. It didn't seem to fit the song to me. Sweet Dreams was a way better video.

This is one of my favourite songs ever. I'm glad it went to Rachel - her voice is perfect for it and Come And Get It is an amazing album. I agree the video could have been better but all that really matters to me is the song. I'm not fussed about videos, promotion or sales. Geri's voice would have just ruined it.

Plus without the whole Geri/Some Girls debacle, we wouldn't have Me Plus One, which is a brilliant song.

Well the latter rules Geri out. She's a talent vacuum and has no stage presence whatsoever.

She is mental.

Not very familiar with Annie's material, apart Chewing Gum and her "reworking" of Everybody but this songs is a very nice slice of electro-pop too! Thanks for sharing

As for the Some Girls video - I thought it let Rachel Stevens down as she had a great song to fall back on from FD's flop and could have done much better with the promo but it was released on time for Sports Relief wasn't it? So no wonder then...

You should hear Annie's Songs Remind Me of You - one of the best pop songs of the last 10 years.

Me Plus One also features one of Geri's dogs barking/yapping in the background. I always find it odd that one of the writers of MPO, Hannah Robinson, went on to work with Geri, seeing as the track she wrote about her is quite scathing.

Geri should just stick to covers about singing in the rain. Just because she left UK's biggest girl group doesn't mean she should be first choice. I think Rachel Steven's did a cracking job although I fell tired of her once she started appearing everywhere at the opening of an envelope. I still to this day find it hysterically hilarious that she turned to the recording of Band Aid without being invited.

I didn't know Rachel did that seems really unlike her.

geri is a big diva I used to really like her but there's been so many stories of her behaviour some ex assistant sold a story on her I think geri has mental problems it's very sad she can't keep a man that's probably what she needs a stable loving relationship.
