It's only a matter of time now before the regime falls.

Russia's position over the next few days is going to be fascinating. Will they continue to stand righrt behind Assad or will they change tact, mindful that if the new Syrian regime hates them then they will lose their military harbour and their main sphere os Middle East influence.

The more the Russians and Chinese support Assad's brutal rule, the less likely those two countries are to gain favour with any new administration. I hope that the Russians are thrown out of their Mediterranean naval base at Tartus as direct payback for supporting the Assad regime and hopefully that will encourage them to stop supporting corrupt dictatorships across the planet.

There was an article in the Independent about a week ago that included an interview with a Russian strategic analyst who works in Moscow and his conclusion was that the Assad regime has only months left and that it's on the way out. In the light of other events this week, that timetable might turn out to be shorter.

Things are different for China. Their only interest in Syria is making sure that no principle of UN intervention is allowed to be established. They couldn't care less who rules it.

And what responsibility will the French take for denying a state to a minority people, and putting them in power over a majority, with predictable results? There is no way that minority could have survived in power without being brutal and suppressing democracy, and I have no doubt the French supported that over decades.
