there are big adverts at the bottom and i dont think it should be there. i have a programm that removes it but only for a day.

sometimes i cant see the text when im typing and its very slow bringing the windows up.

i cant click on links to open them up to mozilla pretty sure there is a way of fixing it but i cant remember how ?

Strange ... ads on MSN are (AFAIK) supposed to be at the top of the page. If you're using IE9 to view the site, then using
the EasyList TPL should filter the ads. If you're using Firefox or Chrome the AdBlock Plus add-on should do the trick.

It's quite a while since I've been to MSN. I only ever see it on the very rare occasions I open up IE.

Those options should filter out the ad-banners on the main MSN portal pages in your web browser.

That's odd ... there is no MSN branded desktop app. MSN is a website, and is usually the default homepage in IE.

Ahhh ... now we're getting somewhere! Although Messenger hasn't actually been MSN branded for several years now,
they rebranded it as Windows Live Messenger as part of the Windows Live software package. More recently though,
the boffins at Microsoft are ditching Windows Live branding. It's all a bit silly I know ... but that's marketing for ya!

Messenger is now simply called, Messenger, while MSN is just Microsoft owned content portal sites nowadays.

The nearest I can find for getting rid of ads in the Messenger app is a third party add-on called A-Patch, although
newer updates for Messenger tend to disable add-ons like this, especially ones that can block the advertisements.

With so many problems, have you tried uninstalling MSN and reinstalling it again? Probably the latest version aswell.

I think you want the small Messenger icon in the system tray (Notification Area) near the clock, that whenever you
right-click it, a small menu pops up with the Sign Out option amongst a few other options. To do this, you have to
make Messenger think it's running on Windows XP. This doesn't require you to reprogram your laptop with the
older version of Windows you'll be glad to know, as that would be long winded and rather counter-productive!

No ... all you need to do, is right-click on the icon that you normally use to start up Messenger, which is either in
your Start - Programs - Windows Live menu, or among the icons on the Desktop. Click the Properties option in
the menu that pops out from here. In the Properties dialog that appears, go to the Compatibility tab at the top.

In the Compatibility mode section, tick the box where it says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and
select Windows XP Service Pack 3 from the dropdown list directly below that. Click OK, job's a good 'un ... !

It's best to do all this while Messenger isn't running and completely closed.

MSN is a website, not a software application. You cannot uninstall it from your computer and reinstall it.

I thought you were taking the mick before, but i guess not.

I believe the OP means the MSN live messenger app, and considering they confirmed they have already reinstalled it i believe you are wrong.

MSN is historically a messaging app and is still known as such a thing by name.

Historically is correct. Nowadays, MSN is just content portal websites. The instant messaging client originally known
as MSN Messenger is now simply called Messenger. It officially stopped being an MSN product in December 2005.

People need to realise Messenger has had nothing to do with MSN for several years now! Even the Windows Live
branding is being phased out by Microsoft's marketing and branding gurus in time for the release of Windows 8!

Regardless of what it is called the OP has magically reinstalled this app. So its obviously what they are on about. So when helping you need to be helping with the correct software what ever you wish to call it.

Difficult to advise you without being able to see it and tinker with a few things. Was this version working OK for a while and it just started happening all of a sudden? Could it be malware or do you think it is a function of the messenger which has gone faulty?

I don't go on Windows much these days but the messenger I was using last had ads at the bottom which did pop up if you mouse over them. Could it be this function which is kicking in when it shouldn't? If you already uninstalled and re-installed it and the problem was still there then perhaps a faulty registry key or something which persisted through that process. If so try again but run a registry cleaner (with caution) after uninstall and then try the re-install.

its been fine ever since i can remember and only started happening recently

Have you performed a scan with an anti-malware program such as malwarebytes? If not then download it, let it update its definitions and then do a full scan.

What anti-virus are you using? Is that up to date and performing full scans?

Note that some malware is sophisticated and will disable or block anti-malware and anti-virus programs, but if this happens then it is a clue pointing to malware and you can take more aggressive measures as the next step.

To do the registry thing is not all that difficult. Uninstall Messenger, download CCleaner and use that to clean the registry, this should hopefully remove registry entries left behind by the uninstall, then try re-installing Messenger.

If you don't feel confident though, best to seek the hands-on help of someone with more experience.

I had loads of problems with the latest version of messenger that gets forced onto you, also got contacts disappearing and what not, so i went back to Version 9, just re-installed it under Vista SP2 Compatability (or was it SP1, cant remember now ), so it can't update to the latest version
