Using iPhone abroad
Hi,
I'm taking my iPhone to Thailand/Malaysia/Singapore/Dubai next month. Am I correct in saying that if I go into Settings, General, Network and de-select Enable 3G, as well as ensuring Data Roaming is off (which it already is), this will ensure I get no data charges when abroad? To what extent can I still access and use free wifi when I come across it? Is there any risk of me paying for this in any way? Is there anything else I should do to avoid data charges? Thank you in advance. |

If you have data roaming switched off then it won't use any data on foreign networks.
For extra peace of mind turn off cellular data. In regards to WiFi, it will only automatically connect to networks you have previously connected to. You have to manually connect to any new networks, and you are not charged on your phone bill for using WiFi networks. Non-free WiFi hotspots are usually PAYG and you have to setup an account with the provider, giving card details, etc. |

Calls and texts will still come through. You've made the mistake that many people make, in equating 3G with the internet or data usage. You can use a 3G network to make phone calls or to send/receive text messages. Turning 3G off will not save you money. |

So if I leave 3G on, but turn off Data Roaming and Cellular Data, I should be able to get texts and calls, but I won't be charged for any data use? |

Turn off 3G as well otherwise you will get data charges. Just use 2g for calls and texts.

Turning of Data Roaming should suffice but if you want to be extra sure also disable Cellular Data which will stop all data but still allow calls and texts. Whether the phone is connected to a 2G or 3G network is irrelevant. |

In that sentence, you refer to turning off 3G to avoid data charges, which is totally unnecessary and will result in poorer coverage. |
