One Direction... The new Beatles / Spice Girls

Don't worry - I'm not placing one Direction on the same level of talent and musical influence on the legendary Beatles or Spice Girls.

What I mean by this is.....they are never out the f*£$%^& press.
Why are they featured so much - sometimes in such trivial stories, when people like Nelly Futardo are making comebacks and don't get 2 inches of coloumn.

I get what you are saying, they do seem to appear in the Sun every day, and even from the most flimsy of stories, and I think they represent all that is wrong in pop music however why do you spoil your argument here??(BIB)

I think its all subjective but I don't think anyone can deny the impact that Scary, Baby, Sporty, Ginger & Posh had on late 90s music.

One Direction while they are a phenomenon they aren't likely to create a legacy of young boys wanting to be them the way the Spice Girls did with young girls. Adele cites Geri Halliwell, of all people, as one of her main idols!

All the press/hype right now is to be expected.. Anything with their name on attracts tween girls by the ton.
A couple of years ago the UK Press had an obsession with JLS too - Obviously not to the same level, as JLS never got anywhere Stateside (which makes the hype 50 times as much). But I remember there were mutiple articles churned out constantly about who this one fancied, who that one fancied.

Remember the JLS Birmingham stampede..? How times have changed.

Give it a year or even less, I doubt it will be the same.

One Direction are just the same as the Spice Girls... Beatles? No chance.

Oh please. They may have had an impact at the time on young girls dancing around their bedrooms, again like One Direction they were a media created 'phenomenon' but they had no impact or influence whatsoever on 90's music or anything beyond, they were a manufactured pop act with not a great deal of talent.

Girl groups can't really be compared to Boybands in that sense..

Teen girls want to be glamorous like the female popstars who date the movie stars. Obviously
But very few guys want to be the guy who is prettier than his own girlfriend, who all the other guys hate - like most boyband members. Obviously.

That's just how teens are.

It's much harder for a girl group to generate the ridiculous levels of hype boybands do though..

One Direction are actually quite awesome. Catchy/simple songs, so the SpiceGirls comparison is quite accurate. But TheBeatles, musically are quite different.

Good god no. They've had one catchy debut single and not much more. Singing puppets.

I don't see how one direction or the spice girls can be put in the same sentence as the Beatles.
The Beatles had talent, played their own instruments and wrote their own songs as well as had very successful solo careers which have spanned decades.
One direction are just little boys who have had too much, too fast, too young and it's gone to their heads. The spice girls were just loud mouthed, classless and were lucky enough to hit the market at the right time.
McCartney and Lennon are two of the best song writers of all time. One direction and spice girls do not come close..

Don't worry... the world knows that, it's just the deluded little fangirls on DS that tell themselves that to make them feel better as their favourite artists have no credibility.

I know one direction can't be placed on the same scale as the Beatles. However, the Spice Girls wrote their own music, and each (perhaps with the exception of posh) has had very successful solo careers. They were allowed to meet royalty and changed the way women were seen forever.

Allowed to see royalty? So has Miranda Hart...

And what do you mean "changed the way women were seen forever"? They kickstarted the idea of girls with no talent being thrown together to make money off kids.

Try not to make sh-t up as you go along Or at least try and make the "sh-t" sound good.

This has got to be the funnniest thing I have seen here for ages, in what way did the they change the way women were seen? I think Ms Pankhurst can rest peacefully....and wrote their own music? no, a few co-writing credits i.e adding a word here and there, does not qualify them writing their own 'music'

They will probably go the same way as all the other popular boybands. 1 will turn out to be gay. Another will become a drunk or drug addict, another a rebel who the others hate and gets bullied out the group etc etc.....

There's not as much fuss around them as there was about the Spice Girls in the 90's.

There's certainly not as much fuss about them as there was about the Beatles in the 60's.

The Spice Girls wrote the vast majority of their songs with either the Absolute boys, Stannard and Rowe or Elliot Kennedy.

for example, before they had a record deal, before they had found Simon Fuller to manage them they wrote Say You'll Be There with Elliot Kennedy after tracking him down at his house in Sheffield.
