File based backup software

Looking for software recommendations. Just received a WD "My Book Essentials" drive and the software that came with it is causing problems (not backing up / copying over files larger than 50Mb). I've looked on the WD forums and seems it's an ongoing problem I don't want to waste time waiting for WD to get their act together so was hoping others could recommend any decent software.

What I would like is to be able to choose individual files and have them backed up as they are altered eg a photo edited in Photoshop is instantly "synched/updated" with the copy on the new drive. Hope I've made sense

I've got several external drives but never bothered with software, just did "copy and paste" periodically but it's all getting too time consuming ...

have a look at Allway Sync they have a version that if you don't sync too much data per month it's free. I have the Pro version as I have a lot of data to backup

Allway Sync definitely has the ability to monitor files in real-time and sync as necessary.

SyncToy doesn't have this ability, not sure about about Robocopy.

Also worth taking a look at cloud storage for your most essential data - Dropbox, SkyDrive, Google Drive, etc. This makes a nice addition to your regular onsite backups.

Jumping bytes has a ton of functions including auto sync of monitored folder and event driven backups like when a network drive an external hard drive is connected.

No Problem, I'm sure I'll get dropbox completed some day

I love the variety of triggers that can be used in allway sync, if all else fails you can even use Windows Task Scheduler

Does not affect me, plus my sensitive stuff is encrypted before being sent to DB.

It's whizzing through the files, chuffed to bits it's handling everything I'm throwing at it atm I'll use it for a while and if still happy then will buy it.

You've been flogging that for 2 years. It does even do the things you say it does!
