What's the lifespan of a Playstation/Xbox 360 disc?

Just wondering, how long would a disc last stored on a shelf and kept in good condition before it would degrade to a point in which it would no longer work?

Well an Xbox 360 'disc' is a DVD.

A PS3 'disc' is a Blu-Ray.

Two entirely different things.

Average life spans range from

30 to 100 years for DVD

100-150 years for BD

Depending so many factors though. It would possible to work out exact life span. An the averages are very debatable considering hows these are worked out.

All my PS1 games - the ones that I kept in good condition - still work perfectly.

A well looked after disc should not need replacing.

BD's do have protective layer. Not like you describe though, Here is some videos showing how effective it is. Basically you would find it next to impossible to scratch one without intending too so with a very sharp object.

One of the first CDs I ever bought, Nevermind by Nirvana (the one with the origianl cover art) is 21 years old and still plays with no problems.

I would think that the discs for consoles would last quite a long time. It does depend on how they are used though. My original Oblivion disc clocked up more than 1400 hours of 'saved' game time and was starting to act up and looked a bit ropey. But this was before had the ability to install my games and so it would spin in the drive constantly.

My original fallout 3 disc started playing up . I replaced it with the edition that included the DLC's.
Apart from that, oldest one (and most used ) is probably Oblivion.

Well ive had a PSX crash bandicoot disk since 95-96 time and still fine to this day. People worry about dvd and disk lifespan way too much.

Some second hand games I've bought have been in terrible condition. You'd think that people would at least treat them properly.

You'd be surprised at the amount of people who casually touch the underside of the disc, rather than clutching it gently around the edges.

And then they wonder why their discs don't seem to last very long.
