since you've proved the cable works its probably got hardcoded network settings

you'll need to enable dhcp on the machine so it can grab the relevant details from the router

Forgot to mention this

The computer has recently occasionally lost the internet connection but a restart of the computer has re-established the connection.

Looks like you need to reinstall the Network drivers, you can download them from the motherboard manufacturers website

Usually you have a setup.exe to run

What does the file Note say?

Right click on rt86win7 (setup information) and see if there is an install menu option.

Try Slim Drivers http://www.driverupdate.net/ which says:
Scan Your PC for missing, broken or out-of-date drivers
Download Updated Drivers Manually for FREE
or even good old Windows Updates under 'Optional Updates'

If you want to check what's in you PC, including motherboard http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Just curious, but that's an odd looking Window frame style in your screenshots. Looks even earlier than XP

Right clicked on a pop up box appeared with the usual "open, send to, delete, etc. and install which I clicked on and this appeared

I clicked "open" on this and this appeared

Nothing in the others to suggest a way of installing

Just curious what would the price of a new card be and would it come with the driver and most important of all how do I choose one to suite the specs of my computer

Some of the snapshots probably looked strange because they were originally on "Irfanview image viewer" before being snapshot via "Screensnapr"

You may have more luck with the file from HP for Realtek RTL8101E Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC Driver
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...tem=ob-79839-1

It's a self-install .exe

The first file would have been installed by clicking next from here http://screensnapr.com/e/foVMf8.jpg and then pointing to the folder.
