Info needed about 'BT's Faster Total Broadband'

Hey Guys,

So im currently with O2 broadband (As I have a mobile with them so they can offer me cheaper broadband then everyone else) and the most I have ever been able to get over ADSL in my area (and currently) is about 3.5mb. (We do not have fiber down our street).

I had a look at the BT infinity website and although I cant get Infinity it has given me the option of 'Faster Total Broadband' which will apparently allow me to get about 12.5mb.

I called BT for more info on how this works if its not fiber and O2 can only give me 3.5mbs. The guy said its actually not a very common option people get but an engineer would visit and fit a new faceplate which splits the voice and data traffic (I thought that's what an ADSL filter did anyway) but I guess it must do more.

My question is can anyone go into more detail on exactly what the tech behind this is? Is it still standard ADSL and has anyone got experience with it.

The guy said it was only BT who could offer this option, is that true? Or can I get this faceplate somewhere else and have it working with a standard ADSL router?

Thanks for any info guys!

Faster BT total broadband is fibre broadband. The only reason it isn't promoted as BT Infinity is because your speed is below 15meg. (BT only market 15 meg + connections as Infinity).

You can get a faceplate and fit it yourself to a master socket, you are not supposed to mess with the master socket itself.
I think though as above we are talking about fibre and that needs new stuff which can only be fitted by Openreach. You could not go from 3.5Mb to 12.5Mb on the same line if it wasn't a change to fibre .... you must live a fair way from the exchange.

I'm only about 20 miles out from Central London too. I think i'm about 1.5 - 2 miles away from the exchange. 3.5mbs is nice compared to the crappy 1mb I used to get, I think i'm gonna pay the extra to upgrade to 12.5 though. Im a bit concerned about the caps/traffic shaping I think BT do though, I don't think ive noticed this with O2 at all and I can be quite a heavy user.

I wish we had the option of cable but I think its just never been laid down our street.

BT have unlimited options for heavy users and the only thing that I know of that is throttled during the day is p2p and that is easy enough to get round if it's important enough.

Any more questions about the Faster Total Broadband service? It is a Fibre to the Cabinet service like Infinity. Works exactly the same and needs an engineer visit to fit a new socket and Openreach modem.

BT are the only ones that sell a product like this at the moment yes.

I phoned them again today and the guy said if I want the 'faster broadband' I have to get the unlimited subscription which would be about £26 a month. And that would still have traffic management at peak times.

Not worth it really. As much as I want to go from 3.5mb to 12mb to pay that much extra would be silly.

I contacted O2 retentions again and they offered me 6 months free on my existing service if they can keep me for another 12 months. Sounds good to me - Hopefully in 12 months time there might be other cheaper options.

You really should do your own research. You can get infinity for 18 a month with the first 3 months for 9 quid.

Is there a wireless service available where you are? There are a few now popping up in different places.

£26 a month is what I used to pay for BT normal ADSL, which I used too get 2 megabits if I was lucky. seems Bt have decreased their prices, but then I suppose they can do that as they force people to take line rental from them now.

You really should read the thread, infinity isn't available to the OP.

Fibre = Infinity. Ragardless, for the pedants the upto 16meg product is still the same price and my point still stands up as long as bt match the price. Im a little confused though - if the faster broadband product is slower than infinity then why would bt quote a higher price ?. Is it because the op want unlimited?

Infinity is only a product name, so if BT wants to call any thing over a certain speed Infinity and give offers on that then they can.
Maybe there is no competition in the lower speeds at the moment, so they are not worried about people going to other ISPs, but if say Sky started to take people that can only get lower speeds, then I am sure Bt will change their tune.

This is BT, no one can understand what they do half the time or why they do it.

I still think that people should be offered different speeds, some one only want ten megabits, then fine, and then cut the price, if someone wants the full speed, fine do that and put the price up .

Maybe when more of the country is covered by fibre one way or the other, things may change and people will be offered services by speed. if I lived closer to the exchange I would still be on ADSL and i would stay with that, a good 10 megabits is fine for me. but I don't, which is one of the reasons I went wireless.

.
But speed is not the factor which determines the cost of the line to BT. It doesn't them any less money to provide say a 10 megabit line than it would a 20 megabit line, so it doesn't make sense for them to charge the end users like this.

It could be argued that a slower line should cost more since it is longer and therefore there is more cable to provide and maintain.

That is how my wireless Isp charges me, by speed, i want a faster speed i pay more, If have a slower speed like say 10 megabits then there is no way I can use as much data as someone who is on 40 Megabits, if they use it to it's full or not is another thing.

i like this idea of paying for extra speed.

cable been there for years and i would like to know when they maintain the cables, because Bt never seems to bother with ours.
mine was suppose to have been replaced 11 years back, never was, wonder what on earth i paid line rental for.
