So it would not make sense at all – for the operator to do that as you would be paying less which they obviously don’t want you to do.

For some reason you omitted to quote the last two sentences of my reply which say exactly that:-

Of course it would make only sense from the subscriber's point of view to switch them to SIM-only at the end of contract thus saving £10/month. The phone network would prefer you to keep paying that extra £10/month

That presumes that switching to a SIM-only tariff would automatically save the customer £10/month.

There are plenty of people who would not save £10/month by switching to a SIM-only tariff and would even end up losing money by doing so.
As well as customers on older/discontinued tariffs who, if they were moved away from them, would not be able to switch back again.

The simple fact is that there's no one size fits all measure, therefore people have to be left to make their own choices when their contract ends.

Contacting the customer in advance of their contract expiration & offering them alternatives would be nice but again the mobile networks prefer to rely on their customers' inertia & keep them paying the high monthly fee even when the handset cost has been recovered over the minimum contract period.

I agree there.

I would be absolutely furious if a company were to switch me to some random payg scheme rather than rolling my contract forward on a monthly basis once the initial period has expired.
