Barenboim's Beethoven 9th

For the first time ever I heard a counterpoint to the Joy Theme on the violas being played by the Alto-clarinet; an interesting piece of clarity.

I'm sure that your post has most DS users mystified!.

Barenboim's proms this year have been fantastic.

I haven't heard any of his Proms concerts but saw the TV programme of his orchestra's world tour.

I haven't seen him conduct before - a very unusual technique it looked like to me.

So great to hear the complete Beethoven cycle done at the Proms this year - and also great to have the West-Eastern Divan orchestra playing too. I've always preferred Barenboim's opera conducting myself but there's no denying the man is a genius!

The Ninth was the only prom I managed to catch unfortunately. I very much enjoyed it and thought the woodwind section in particular was beautiful. I've seen and heard a fair deal of criticism of Barenboim but I think he's a very dynamic performer and conductor. He gets a lot of respect from me for being one of the founders of the West-Eastern Divan orchestra.
