Threads was very, very brutal.

Another good one was Omega Man.

On a sidenote concerning Total Recall, this version IS supposedly closer to the source material than the previous Arnie movie, apparently.

As others have already said, Jericho is very good.

Also Dark Angel was set in a post apocalyptic America so I suppose that qualifies, was a very good TV show

I don't know if you're into animated shows or not, but there was this superb post-apocalyptic web series called "Afterworld" (aired in 2007). I cannot recommend it more as a post-apocalyptic fan myself. I'm not hugely into animated stuff myself (I mean I like Shrek and generally like Pixar/Dreamworks animations), but I wouldn't say I'm a rabid fan or anything. But this "Afterworld" show got me hooked like a crack cocaine addict lol. You should be able to find it on NetFlix if you're interested in watching it.

The show is very grounded despite there being many sci-fi elements and what makes the show stand out is the central overarching mystery of what caused the apocalyptic event, which will force you to keep watching. Unlike most post-apoc stories, the apocalyptic event depicted in Afterworld is the be-all-end-all of the story and not just a plot device to wipe the human population out and send civilization to the dark ages.

Don't get me wrong, Afterworld is hardly groundbreaking or earth-shattering and it does have the old tried-and-tested conspiracy plot running throughout it, but it approaches the genre in such a fresh and creative way that you will applaud it for its ambition/boldness (at least I did). It really examines the post-apoc world in such a interesting and detailed way in regards to the different groups of survivors that are out there. I honestly cannot believe why Afterworld hasn't been made into a live action TV series yet, it's better than a lot of the drivel on TV nowadays IMO . It would be perfect on a cable channel like AMC or HBO. I would be like the number one fan .

Here's the link for the Afterworld wiki just in case you'd like to read up on what the show is about exactly: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afterworld_%28TV_series%29
I am a PA fan myself and will have to check it out. Thanks for that.

The Colony, post apocalyptic reality show. Sadly only two seasons, one where a group had to live in a large lot in LA, and the second was a group in an area devastated by Katrina.

Had some dud bits, but interesting how they went about securing drinkable water, food, shelter and electricity.

No problem. My pleasure . It is worth checking out even if you don't end up liking it, because it has some very interesting ideas running throughout it. I'd like to see what other posters think about this show as it seems not many on DS have watched Afterworld before, so you do watch it when you have the time .

Also, one other thing... when Afterworld originally aired in 2007, each episode was like 2-3 minutes long. Don't let the short length put you off as the writers are great at packing a lot of story content into each episode. I know my brother was put off by that.

Though, I did read last year that the Afterworld creators had compiled episodes together to serve as 22-23 minute episodes on DVD. I think the same applies to users on Netflix. So you should be fine. But I thought I'd warn you just in case.

22-23 minute episodes would be better so i wouldn't have to keep clicking to watch the next episode

I'll see if i can find a place to watch it. I don't have netflix - on Lovefilm instead.

As far as movies are concerned, my 2 favorite post-apocalyptic movies are:

Six-String Samurai
and
A Boy And His Dog

The original series of Survivors is worth a watch too - most of them are on youtube courtesy of 'theaftermathshow'.
The Quiet Earth

I prefer reading books from this genre - never seen 'The Postman', but the book is classic PA fiction. I like my PA films with zombies.

It took me about a week of sleepless nights when I first found AUD to catch up - got immediately hooked, but left it when I'd caught up - need to get back to that so thanks for the reminder!

Other zombie fiction in similar vein:
Day by Day Armageddon
Day by Day Armageddon - beyond exile, both by JL Bourne
Alison Hewitt is Trapped - Madelaine Roux

These were originally written as online blogs as is AUD.

Always have been dissapointed that the third book was never made into a series.

Another vote for The Last Train here, it is available on Youtube as well:

And as mentioned above "The Quiet Earth" is a very different but great post-apocalyptic film.
