Should we pay to sit next to each other on the plane?

Hi,

So me and my girlfriend just booked our holiday for the end of this month and Ive just realised we are not guaranteed to sit next to each other unless we pay something like £60 to pick our own seats with Thomas Cook, so the question is... Is it worth it?.

I realise it depends on how long the flight is, if we get to the airport early we may have a better chance to sit next to each other etc but I'm just not sure how many other people will pay for the privilege leading to less seats for us two.

We're flying to Sham El Sheik which is bout 5 hours there and 6 hours back for some reason.

it would be good to go to the airport knowing we are going to be sat next to each other but the price seems unfair, any advice?

Michael

We never bother and there's usually 3 of us travelling together. We've never been separated yet but if we were it wouldn't bother me.

Just get there in fairly good time.

I've never bothered before either and always managed to get seats together, just wasn't sure how many people pay for the privilege nowadays

I've found that when I'm split up with whoever I fly with, we're either only a few seats away or some kind person will let us have their seat so that we can sit together.

Are you planning to spend the flight talking? If not, will it make that big a difference if you are not sitting together?

of course we plan on talking , don't want to be on a plane and be at opposite ends of it when we could sit together

I will never fly with that shower again because of this very issue. Extortion. On my flight they had seperated a mother from a todler (adjacent seat numbers but seperated across the isle).

Would you say it should be alright if we get there early or should we just bite the bullet?

Why would a toddler have its own seat?!

I though toddlers had to have the inner seats?

Is there anyway you can check what seats have already been prebooked op? You might be able to judge whether you have a good chance of sitting beside each other if you can, maybe start the process to book the seat but don't actually confirm it

Do it really matter if you're apart for 5/6 hours? Considering you have the whole holiday to talk to each other then I would save 60pounds and sit wherever. Listen to music, watch the in-flight movie and have a few drinks with the money you have saved

mums with under 2s on their knee have to have the inner seats cause they have the extra oxygen mask

We weren't sitting together going on our honeymoon but we were across the aisle from each other, and on the way back we were together, went on a TC holiday last year and we were seated together, so we are doing the same this year, just turning up early and hoping for the best lol.

After two years old, children get their own seat.

Doesn't bother me at all if I'm not sat next to OH. I just sleep or read on a plane, and don't need any company for either activity!

I'd hazzard a guess the organisation have taken a decision to apply this as a revenue generator therefore turning up early is unlikely to be of benefit.

Watch their rep raise this issue at the hotel before you return.

Taking a couple of foreign holidays a year for the past 15 years, we've only once been separated, and that was only by an aisle. We usually get to the airport about three hours before the flight, and have never bothered pre-booking. Don't forget, on a holiday flight, most of the passengers are in couples anyway, so the odd seats are usually aisle seats.

Judging by Trip Advisor's Airline Forum, some american airlines have started allocating seats at the booking stage. However, they're allocating widely scattered seats to couples and parties, who then have to pay if they want to sit together. Let's hope that doesn't catch on here.

the only time i paid extra was for a legroom seat when i flew with a friend who is 6 foot 5.

I am now worried as flying to america this month and want to sit with my OH and HAVE to sit with my autistic ten year old or he will freak out. maybe I will take his 'I have autism' card to the airport?

My 3rd time on an plane I was separated from my mum and dad, I was 14, but they did split all sorts of families, there was actually no need for it.

Just get there early and get near the front of the queue. I doubt many people pay for it. We've never had issues just waiting till we get to the airport.
Mind you we're off to Canada next week. Dad has paid for us and he's got us in Club Class and we won't have the issue. I am sooooooo excited I can't tell you! Will be the one and only time I don't fly cattle class.

We always ask for 2 Aisle seats so we dont have to ask someone to move when we go to the loo.
Never had any problem., never paid extra.
