Why are the housemates no longer able to have successful media careers?

I've noticed that ever since the show has moved to Channel 5, the 'civilian' housemates no longer have 15 minutes of fame, become z list celebs or actually end up having successful media careers (Brian Dowling, Kate Lawler). Sure, the ratings aren't exactly impressive but I was under the impression that because the show was on a channel owned by Richard Desmond, the chances of housemates becoming celebs would be far more greater. The fact that Lauren is the only Channel 5 housemate to get a magazine deal surprises me to be honest.

It seems that a lot of CBB HMs have had "deals". Example: Natalie Cassidy, despite hardly anybody actually liking her in the house, has become one of the faces of Desmond's Health Lottery.

It's due to snobbery in TV land.

The 'luvvies' dont want to be associated with contestants from that 'chavvy TV show' I mean come on darling it's soooo 1990's

Hello darling its 2012 now

I would guess one of the reasons is the sheer amount of competition from shows such as Towie, Georgie Shore, Made in Chelsea etc. Not to mention things like Britain's Got Talent, The Apprentice and The X Factor. When Big Brother first started it was unique and fresh and people wanted to know about it, whereas now there are so many reality show contestants that it is hard to keep up with them all.

I think Alison Hammond who wasn't even in the house very long, has had one of the best careers from it. Plus magazines are not nearly as lucrative as they used to be, most are struggling for advertisers, and they rely more and more in their websites to bring in a bit of cash.

Journalism in general has taken quite a beating from the internet. I used to buy several magazines a month, but now I very rarely buy one.

Yeah, I've noticed this too. Georgia Salpa was on the cover of FHM .

The show is only watched by half of the people who watched it when it was on c4.
So the people who go on the show aren't as well known, having them doing anything else is by no means a guaranteed boost in that companys product like it once was.

The house mates have become a lot more unlikable imo, I still don't have a favorite from this series.

Because nobody watches it anymore, because it's crap.

Viewers went down, that's why C4 dropped it in the first place, and that's why it's on C5. There just isn't the public interest there once was. Which is what you'd expect after almost 15 years or whatever it's been. So they change things in the name of "shaking things up" and "keeping it fresh", only resulting in alienating even more of the die-hard fans who'd stuck with it. Thus losing even more viewers.

If less people are famililar with the faces who were in the show, then those faces aren't going to be as marketable, hence less media deals.

I think there are careers out there to be had but it is due to the calibre of the contestants. Jade was rather unique in that she was a novelty due to her ignorance and grit, so was interesting because of that. But clones of that type can't sustain such levels of interest.

The only contestants this year who have any hope of ongoing media exposure are Lauren (beautiful, university educated in something a bit different - so could go on to do something that links her course with a programme) and Benedict (who also has a 'talent' and that combined with his teaching ability could turn that in to something too).

But what of the rest? What do Conor and Luke S realisitcally have to offer us? Where would Ashleigh shine? Caroline and Becky are not very nice gels. Scott is limited. Shiv's saying would pall pretty quickly as they did in the house.

Adam could actually be a voice over artist and I think could make a good living.

Luke A would not want to trade on transitioning for the rest of his life and we are overloaded with celeb chefs.

So what talents do they have that would make them so bankable and entertaining beyond their shelf life on the show?
