Play.com New packaging for Steelbooks

Anyone else got a steelbook off play recently.

I ordered two cheap steelbooks and was surprised at the new packaging play are using. Instead of receiving it in thin flimsy cardboard packaging they now send them in proper hard boxes with the steelbook encased in thick foam.

I know play take an age to dispatch and only send by second class and their website is the slowest known to man but they certainly have raised the game on their packaging.

Sorry to hear that, on all accounts this new packaging has been out a while, you should complain.

Here is a video of the new packaging from a guy I subscribe to on youtube.

The play stuff is from around 5.30 minutes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwOc98E68lU

The two I got were both double plays.. man on fire and taken, 2 movies we have have not seen so for the price it was a good buy, and the steelbooks look fantastic as well.

Stopped using Play years ago as they used jiffy bags for box sets.

Arrived broken on many occasions and they refused to refund me for my return postage.

But amazon only use flimsy cardboard so in fact receiving box sets from play are more protected then amazon.

I dont use play that much out of principle since they changed from sending 1st class by default to second classs by default. Every other CI retailer send first class free of charge, play have no excuse not to send first class FOC as well.

I've stopped using Play recently too.
I've changed to Zavvi.

Yeah I only use play as a last resort, they take way too long to dispatch and with second class as default takes an age to arrive, from ordering to receiving is always almost a week, thats too long for me to wait.
Also their website is shocking, 5 second delay every time you want to do something, god knows why its so slow. Put something in the search and hit enter, your lucky to get a result in 5-10 seconds.

My Amazon box sets come in a massive cardboard reinforced box so nowhere near as flimsy as Play's jiffy bags where almost all 4 corners are dented up.

Plus Amazon have a freepost return policy whereas Play refused to refund my postage on a broken box set I returned to them.

I used Play from the very beginning when everything used to be dispatched within 24 hours and sent first class recorded. They are a mere shadow of their former self.

I totally agree with you about play, they are a shadow of their fomrer self, especially since they stopped sending things first class. My 2 steelbooks took 8 days from placing order to receving them which is not acceptable.
With amazon it depends on the boxset, if its a small boxset they cram it into cardboard packaging and I have had many arrive where the boxset has been crushed, but with bigger boxsets amazon do send them in a large box.
Never had a problem with play if an item is damaged they replace and refund the postage to send it back to them. But if an item comes damaged and you feel they wont refund the postage there is another alternative
I find sainsburys pretty good, very fast to dispatch and often their new releases on pre-order are far cheaper than amazon, my hubby got braquo season 1/ season 2 combined boxeset on blu ray for only 18.99 on pre-order on sainsburys, amazon it was 24.99.

What's the alternative?

Another thing that I do not like about Play is the customer service.

When I received the broken DVD box set I sent them an email and it took them 3 days to reply with an email that was really badly written, broken english that did not make much sense. Have they outsourced their customer support to another country.

hmm....just had a look at Play's steelbook selection, and I bought Taken and Man on Fire.

I live in Ireland so I will be interested in seeing if I get the packaging like the guy in that video

Their new packaging is amazing, Amazon UK seem fine but the Canadian Amazon could take note with their horrendous packaging of steelbooks.

Oh HMV too, steelbooks shake around in the cardboard packaging they use, steelbooks are easily scratched.

Certainly don't mind waiting for play.com delivery times when it comes to steelbooks, steelbooks arrive in perfect condition. They even used it for the Batman Begins/Dark Knight steel/plastic book I ordered from them.

I don't know about the re-releases they have released a lot of lately(I got them first time around in nicer designs) but Pitch Black is an excellent steelbook with a gorgeous 'debossed' title. And for £9.99 it's excellent.

New release ones, on the more expensive side, are perfectly fine and up there with the Germans and Canadians for steelbooks.

I'll ask in here instead of making one topic for it, concerning steelbook protectors.

I've just got some thin clear protectors for my steelbooks and wondering if anyone elses uses such things and if they are safe, say sealing them up isn't going to do anything to the material the steelbooks are made of? inside that atmosphere/air not getting to it for example.

I mean these things:

Decided to get them because even though I try to be careful some have slight scruff marks/scratches on them and want to keep them in top notch condition.

You know you're a true steelbook collector when you buy the polybags. Congrats.

For fans of film, they look (and feel) nicer than the cheaper produced plastic cases. Plus they tend to hold their value better with some increasing quite dramatically (thor, iron man, star trek uk steelbooks to name a few), though I'm pretty sure there are better investments out there as most only hold, or actually decrease.

Casual fans need not apply, though if they are that casual, they should probably just join a rental service.

I just happen to like steelbooks better than the normal plastic blu-ray boxes and like to see them on my film shelves. I would just like to keep the front cover from scratching when taking them off the shelf to watch and so on because I have all my steelbooks together and metal on metal sliding together is more likely to scratch.

But if they do increase in value, some I have that are out of print actually sell for ridiculous prices now going by what people are selling them for, it's nice to know in the future.

Every blu-ray I buy now I see if they are on steelbook first all around the world. And if they come out on steelbook later I sell the normal blu-ray and buy the steelbook instead - I did this with the Pitch Black steelbook release that was just released in the UK. That's if I like the steelbook design.

Anyone know about the plastic protector covers?

I have about 50 steelbooks and dont use the plastic bags protectors never been able to find them anywhere to purchase. I doubt they would affect the material, I would just leave the top of the bag undone so the air can get in.
Mine are in a DVD case but if I get one out I move them along to make room to pull it out of the DVD case rather then just pull them out to avoid any marking where one rubs against the other.
