When i had multiroom fitted last december in my preivous house by sky i was told they are not allowed to have the cables going over the roof so drilling through the internal wall is now the only way.

Cables over the roof is aloud, in fact we recently got special rods for doing this, however I would never put a phone cable over the roof, far to thin and brittle. Would never last

The coax cables don't either - and destroy the box as well.

No - and it's a silly idea, if you think about it.

As a point of interest what is Sky's position or that of AVC for that matter regarding drilling holes in the walls of properties where people live in rented accommodation, the permission required to do so and their liability with any damage that may be caused in the process.

We all know, or maybe not, that contrary to regulations many houses have mains cables running down the inside of cavity walls and across to sockets and switches at all odd angles too. There is also damage to dodgy plasterwork on internal walls to contend with. My friend lived in an old house where the plaster was so bad that drilling through a wall would result in huge chunks of plaster coming away. It was so bad he eventually had to have the whole room completely replastered.

With regards to electrics and pipes, we all have a Bosch metal amd voltage detector that must be used before any drilling. As for drilling in rented properties, the onus is on the customer to secure and permission required before we turn up. We work on the assumption that has been done. As for dodgy walls and plastering, these are usually pretty evident before you start work so usually best avoided

That's only OK if the pipe/wiring is fairly shallow, they don't work for deep wires.

Actually the ones we have are pretty reliable and have a 'zoom' function we can use. I've yet to have a critical hit in all the time I've been drilling.

The bosch stud/cable detectors are spot on, just make sure you put your bare hand on the wall you're scanning so you don't get a false electricity warning.

Only problem I have with them is when I use it on new houses that have kingspan (metal foil covered foam insulation board) insulation, just get a constant beep and most of them have plastic water and heating pipes too.

Never had a problem though, electric cables run vertically, and most houses have an aerial faceplate that you can drill below

Use the Zoom button and it looks beyond the layer of foil and gives you a true reading

Our main installer has one, and he demoed it to me a few weeks ago (I was considering getting one), but it didn't seem to perform any better than the cheap one I already have.

thats the last thing you should do you create a false earthand false reading.
when using the detector if you touch the wall while using it, the only thing that should touch the wall is the detector, and as for the drilling internaly im with ctd been doing it for years no hits or issuse, allways explain to the client that i could cause damage as i can not see the conditipn of the plaster, get them to sign a waiver, then drill the hole
