we need less criminals as its the value for money approach so perhaps put a limit on the price of scrap so they'll go and steal other countries scrap might be a cheap solution to some of the problems

I'd prefer more prisons and stronger sentencing.

The police are the public and the public are the police.

33 PSNI officers have been suspended in one year for such offences as assault, sexual assault, death threats, being drunk in possession of a weapon and theft.

If this is indicative of police in the rest of the UK, I am very scared.

Doesn't matter how many there are, there would still be not enough when you need them and too many when you don't.

Agreed, I wouldn't want to pay an extra £20 a month out of my tax / pay to pay for more police I'd prefer that money to go into prison building and stiffening of sentences for repeat offenders.

I'm quite willing to be a bit lenient on somebody for the 1st shoplifting, fighting, theft or even burglary and maybe spare them jail in favour of other options, especially assistance to help them get off drugs etc or change their behaviour, but if they repeat offend then no 3rd chances, straight to prison and longer sentences. I'd pay more tax to lock away repeat offenders, I hate to see people in and out of the courts to hurt the next victim, then a ridiculous sentence and on to the next victim.

We need to more efficiently use the police officers we already have to maximise production rather than spending money that doesn't exist (after recent cuts to the policing budget) on more officers.

To be fair, I don't think you can blame the police for that a lot of the time.

If people are reporting stuff on Youtube, Twitbook and internet forums then the police have a duty to investigate it.

I'm sure they'd rather be out nicking motorists if they had their own way.

There are some things that you cannot just say we have not got the money for more officers there are still things that you cannot make a profit on. If we dont then crime will rise very fast. And then it will prove that crime does pay

We need to teach people to be law abidIng. Too many people need the fear of punishment to do the right thing.

Well I have seen better starts to a thread. Like those that offer an opinion, a reason for it, an argument against it etc, not just a statement of fact
So what do you actually want to discuss OP?
Where do we need them?
When?
Who is going to pay for them?

bobbies on the beat serve no purpose in terms of crime prevention.

Not a very big priority on Mr Camerons list i'm afraid. As long as he and his chums are protected the rest of us can go whistle.

i would have thought his chums would be protected by the same police as everyone else. I'm sure if they are mugged, or their house burgled they still dial 999.

being the victim of crime is a great leveller like that.

what cameron's chums probably don't need is the NHS.

so you would imagine money from the NHS would be diverted to the police, except that is not what happens. which would seem at odd with your view of cameron and his chums.

how do you know what cameron's priorities are, or what his chums want? and how do you propose we pay for more police?

The police do a good job its the courts that let us down. The police arrest someone for 20 times and the courts give them a slap on the wrist, which makes no sense at it means the police are doing the same job 20 times
