Can Russia catch up with us?

After a slow start, Russia have picked up four medals in the last two days and are sitting in 5th place now. They beat us in Beijing and were always going to be our rivals for 3rd but is it too late for them now?

Doubtful ~ they'd have to make up the 14 golds they are in arrears, and that assumes we get no more. Not going to happen.

They might end up with more medals than us, but it's meaningless as they're not weighted.

Gold wise they have a lot to do - that's the official table.

Total wise they are close to beating us.- this is the table they show along with the USA.

Russians are great competitors, it wouldn't be a failure to lose behind them.

Yes. They probably will too. They did last time.

It depends on what events they have to come.

14 golds in the next 4-5 days?

Mind you it would be worse if it was Oz

I can't see them overtaking us on golds, they need 14 to reach us and even then that is on the assumption we don't win any more gold! Maybe on totals but I am hopeful for us staying third on the table which would be such a wonderful thing to happen!

The Olympic spirit of course is 'its not the winning, it's the taking part' [I prefer apart]

They usually finish strongly, but I can't see them catching us

Yeah right.

It's totally political and we're showing the world we are still a main player.

I don't think they quite had a deficit of 14 to make up in the last few days in Beijing, and we've still got a few chances.

Might beat us on medal total, but to be fair, that's just a "USA saving face" method of ranking the nations.

Which means they got 13 Gold and 30 overall for the remaining 5 days. That'd put them at 21 Gold and 74 Overall.

Is it possible? Sure. I think Russia will be similar to Beijing though.

So as long as we don't do awful from here on out, we should be OK.

Nope, because it's too late and there are too few events left. Whilst Russian athletes have been performing well, they have not been the best on the day and so they've been losing out on the gold medals and getting lots of bronze and silver medals instead.

I haven't done a thorough statistical analysis but they appear to be losing gold medal places to the likes of Chinese, Korean (both) and Kazakhstani athletes and that should be a worry to Russian Olympic team officials.

After these games are over, I expect some form of inquiry in Russia and the nationalist Putin might very well throw more oil and gas money at Russian sport to improve its standing in the world although it might take until 2020 to have a noticeable recovery effect in terms of Russian gold medals.

UK has home ground advantage so its difficult. but stats show that the home team usually lose 30% of gold medals in the next olympics, so be prepared.

Indeed, cloudymountain, and I suspect that both Russia and Australia will put more resources into their 2016 and 2020 teams to avoid any more Olympic humiliation so l expect the competition to be tougher too.

Do you have a link? I spent some time today trying to find a genuine Russian site showing the medals table (as opposed to a western site set up for russians to read). But all the sites I found showed the medal table the same way we do.
