That was incredibly rude Dancc and clearly a post only made because of your obsession with Channel 5.
As for US cable - it does seem to be that cable is where all the more interesting drama is coming from - and more and more of it is coming from basic cable. And from the upfronts this year there isn't anything that particularly stands out on the networks as the next big US drama. |

For TNT - Falling Skies, Closer, Rizolli and Isles, Dallas and Perception all rated higher then anything on network tv (expect for the olympics) this week And The Emmys this year is mostly made up of Cable |

Personally I cannot wait for Dallas to start (should look great on Channel 5 HD).... getting back to the Olympics, Athletics has been less successful (medals wise) these last 2 evenings...will ratings dip somewhat??

![]() Besides, American ratings do not always translate on British television so we can't read that much into how Dallas is doing in the States. The only thing the States' figures show is whether it has a chance of being renewed. |

Seriously guys- mock me all you like. I'm past caring now. To be called rude by some of the rudest bunch of people I've come across on DS is kind of a pot kettle situation anyway.
I stand by every single point made in my post. I feel it was a good post and on topic. If you feel Dallas' US ratings really merit being brought up every 5 minutes then so be it, but I will continue to express my bemusement that is has become such a hot topic in here. Apologies to the newbie if any offense was caused by my frustrations spilling out slightly there. I'm clearly on my own in thinking this isn't the ratings story of the moment, so long may the Dallas discussions continue. Better to be talked about than not.

It was probably the worst night of action overall which wasn't helped by a lack of gold for Team GB. I think the success in the triathlon, dressage and cycling earlier also gave the night an 'after the Lord Mayor's Show' feel about it.

The Walking Dead is a good example of that.... ,.,and thats what I wanted to ask Dancc about. I've seen you say you don't expect channel 5 to renew its contract because of bad ratings, but I'm sure last night the announcer said it will be back next year. Does that mean they intend on picking up season 3 or could they decide now after saying that not to bother? I know the ratings don't justify it to be renewed by theem..but maybe they'll go for first run rights |

As for your other point, no I'm not anticipating much of a dip. Whilst the evening could have been better it's been another great day overall for Team GB and that can only fuel appetite even further. It's been an extraordinarily successful event for this country and the BBC with even the minority sports doing well on the interactive streams. As the end draws closer it should continue to snowball with some big peaks expected for the weekend. |

Regarding The X Factor, I do think ITV have ballsed up the launch date this year.
With the Olympics, I can't imagine anyone knows it's coming up at the moment, meaning it has one week to build attention before it's return. I can't see the newspapers caring as much to begin with due to the post-Olympics timing. They would be much better starting it two weeks later and running auditions on Saturdays and Sundays in my opinion. I could easily see a double digit decline for the launch, as although the Olympics is not on, it will surely take publicity away from it. Monday's newspapers will focus on the final day, Tuesday and Wednesday will probably have Olympic stuff, maybe with one or two exclusives from Team GB athletes on the front pages, leaving only the latter part of the week for attention. Maybe I'll be proven wrong... |

BGT managed it, but it did have the whole 'The Voice' thing to bounce along with. First week problems aren't 'terrible' though, the Auditions are mostly a buffer and lead in to the live shows. With Doctor Who + X Factor the following week I think the bums will be on seats. If they chose to watch X Factor is a very different matter. Certainly anything around 8m isn't doom bells - its if the show doesn't grow over the next few weeks it'll be a serious issue, and little to do with The Olympics. They could have done with some pre-Olympics buzz though, a few ads (maybe there were and I missed them) - I haven't heard much about the auditions at all, even on sites like DS - there was what? One or two stories about celeb judges, no one note worthy anyway. EDITED to add: Quote:
My prediction would be low 4 million R/B1, X Factor low 8m, and R/B2 a bit higher in the 4 millions. |

[quote=grimshaw;60229817]The newspapers are a bit of an issue (it was a bit obvious that they felt a bit stung by the lack of stories last year) but they'll likely give them a good Saturday spread - always do. The Olympics are an issue if there are any stories continuing post the games. One positive is that the Olympics has probably boosted the papers, so they'll want to carry that to the next event, and likely have more people reading about X Factor than usual.

It's a sound point that any show launching on a commercial channel in the aftermath of the Olympics is going to find it tougher than usual due to the far lower numbers that have been watching commercial TV. But ITV is better placed than most with the soaps continuing to be a big draw and providing useful windows for promotional trailers. And I don't think they had much choice but to launch an immediate fightback.
Caught the Red or Black promo during Hell's Kitchen. Stylish and well done for the most part, but also confusing that it refers to "skill" and "courage", probably the two words that I would least associate with this programme. I dunno what changes have been made but they'd have to be pretty drastic for it to live up to that billing. |

The X Factor - Launch Ratings:
2011: 10.5m (inc +1: 11.0m) 2010: 11.1m 2009: 9.9m 2008: 10.2m Those are the launch ratings for the last 4 years. They're full-slot ratings too (i.e. not tape-checked). Not sure how the 2012 series wlll launch. There's no real hype which could be a problem - but the auditions always seem to do well. The weather will be a key factor too. It needs to be around 10m (inc +1) IMO. Anything less - and people are going to have a field day. Last year the auditions officially averaged 12.03m (inc +1: 12.51m). The benchmark has been set pretty high. And I think those were the best rated XF auditions ever! So if there is a drop off - coming off the best ever, its not a complete disaster. |

Having just seen the X Factor trailer ((http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaas4...layer_embedded) also Dancc the R/B trailer isn't too hopeful is it? Looks like the same show as last year and they don't seem to sell any new features...or anything really...I think their pretending its live) two things jump out:
1) Whose that fourth judge at the end? She's sort of shoved in there (in fact am surprised at no judge action in that, its the Auditions first, their basically the main draw and source of entertainment between the 5 minutes of music) and I thought there wasn't a fourth one? Bizzare. 2) Its either very brave or very stupid to not have the main theme kick in at the end. It takes off from the X Factor brand and ITV seem to think audiences will be drawn in by a bunch of people saying the same things we've heard them say for years now (and on numerous shows this year). It might be a new theme tune in the main series (thats the impression I get) but I remember Doctor Who still kicked in the old one at the end of its trailers for Matt Smith's first series. I just think thats a bit of a daft thing to not have in an X Factor trailer. I mean its there, but not in the way people remember or think of it. Interesting, but if I were marketing something I'd be blazing the sounds people already know and using the main show to introduce them to new ones. 100,000 views though. What do we all know

I used to love watching Dallas when I was young.
I think it'll rate well over here. It was always a Wednesday thing when I watched it, although the final series went out on Sunday afternoons after seemingly having a massive budget cut with only a handful of the main actors appearing in each episode.

Hopefully the Team GB victory parade will take place on the evening of Saturday 18th August, and the Beeb rightly clear their schedules to show it.
![]() Though if this came to pass, I suspect George would be ditching his Ratings Thread tin hat for a Ratings Thread revolver....
