Lois & Clark The New Adventures of Superman

Just re watched the pilot again as I have the 4 seasons on DVD and must say it really is very old skool show but still really good.

Does anyone else really like this?
Funny enough though I have never watched Smallville before.
Maybe I should try this to?

But Lois & Clark was one of my best shows back in the 90s.

I absolutely loved Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. Had a massive crush on Dean Cain although, bizarrely, my brother used to get nicknamed Clark Kent after this show (I never saw the likeness to Dean Cain otherwise it would have been a bit icky!) I keep meaning to buy myself the complete series box set.

Smallville is brilliant too but utterly different.

Smallville is good for a few series, but I gave up on it when almost everyone seem to develop super powers! You'll have hours of fun, just be prepared for it to get silly around series 4 or 5.

The first season of Lois & Clark was brilliant - sadly, season 2 onwards started going downhill once they started d1cking about with the cast - John O'Shea's Lex Luthor was written out of the show, Tracey Scoggins' Cat Grant was written out, Michael Landes' Jimmy Olsen was replaced by Justin Whalin's Jimmy Olsen.

T'was a real shame, as the first season was very, very good indeed. Why they felt the need to change things so drastically is beyond me.

Great series, Lois and Clark. I've got all four series box sets too.

Wish they hadn't changed Jimmy Olsen though, the one in series one is the best. Glad to see he's the star of his own series now though, I caught him in an episode or two the other day, I think on the SyFy Channel. His name is Michael Landes and as I said he's now in Special Unit 2. Oh,and he's 40 next month on the 18th!

Smallville sucks. Never bothered with it. Anyway this is a Los and Clark thread not a Smallville one.

WB are now talking about a Justice League film for 2015 as I knew they would once they saw how well Fox did with the The Avengers film. I wish they'd get Dean Cain to reprise the role of Superman and maybe Val Kilmer for Batman again in the film. Never happen, but I wish it would. Film companies always go for youth and forget that they've a market in the SOGs too (Slightly Older Group)...

^^ Special Unit 2's quite an old show now - aired back in 2001-2002 for 2 seasons.

Michael Landes has recently guest starred in Upstairs Downstairs, and Don't Trust the B**** in Apartment 23 (which Dean Cain has also guest-starred in).

Completely agree about Landes in L&C, he was much better than Justin Whalin. Landes was pushed out because the producers felt that he resembled Dean Cain too much. Seriously? WTF......

This is a thread in which the OP asked about whether they should watch Smallville therefore discussions of that show are quite relevant. Also, if you never bothered with it, how can you possibly give an opinion about it.

The opening titles sequence of Lois hurtling face first down a slide and then lifting her head will forever remain with me.

Good point. I stand - er, sit - corrected. Bag of Scooby Snacks and a Muttley medal for you! Pax?

I watched an episode or three of Smallville and decided it was making far too much of a period in Clark's life that I wasn't interested in, for various reasons. So didn't continue with it.

I'll say this though. Around ten years ago the makers of Smallville tried their hand at Birds Of Prey, which is The Batman Family without Batman, and that was a marvellous series. Only lasted about a dozen episodes, but I've got an import of the DVD of the series that they bought out and its wonderful. Catch it if you can - its Huntress, Oracle, and Black Canary who're the Birds Of Prey.

Smallville's really two shows in one - the first five seasons, set in Smallville, focus on the boy becoming the man, and then the latter seasons, six through ten, set in Metropolis, focus on the man becoming the superman.

IMO, the show got much better once it relocated to Metropolis, but it was still interesting to see a period of Clark's life that hasn't had much screentime before.

One of the best things about this show was the recurring villain Tempus who surely spoke for every Superman in existence when he said people in the future couldn't believe how stupid Lois was for not realising Clark and Superman were one and the same

I finished Season 1 of this last week, it's a pretty good show in small doses though it does feel pretty dated.

Season One was the best. It's all downhill from there.....

Heh, of course

That was the point of Smallville though, the idea of doing the man behind the myth, which is why I like it. It's an alternative look at how Superman became Superman.
Some seasons are better than others but, overall, it stood up to its core idea imho.

Yep, I'd agree with that, although I enjoyed the first five seasons setting up Clark's teenhood and where the various friends and enemies fitted in to the overall picture, it definitely picked up once he hit Metropolis.

Must admit here in the UK, the first 3 series had their network TV premiere on the BBC, under 'The New Adventures Of Superman' title only, but when Uncle Rupert & the boys at SKY Tv got their hands on it, they used the full title.

SKY Tv ran the first 3 seasons back to back, then gave Season 4 it's UK premiere, with the Beeb having secondary rights & running a few weeks behind, still with the shorter title.

Haven't watched Lois and Clark for ages but i seem to remember Lois just seemed to be going with the flow in the later seasons and wasn't really the same fiesty broad in the earlier seasons.

As for Smallville, i think it was better when it was doing it's own thing. Towards season 8-10 it tried to be more like the mythos and ended up being a more corny version of Lois and Clark.

Gawd, what is it with the terrestrial channels and their renaming of everything, so 'The New Adventures Of Superman' instead of Lois & Clark, and "Smallville: Superman the Teenage Years", instead of just Smallville.

Actually this I can understand and forgive. The Superman legend IN FULL isn't as well known over here as it is in America so Brits aren't as automatically OK with Smallville's claim to fame as Supe's home town. And as for Lois and Clark for the Americans its a nod to two of THEIR heroes Lewis and Clark, (two famous explorers whom neither you or I have ever heard of, I dare say!):

It's worth a try but IMO it went on for too long (10 seasons) and I thought the ending was very poor.

Generally I feel about 4 or 5 seasons is enough for this kind of show. However, you do tend to want to see what the next season has to offer. It's at the end you then conclude it went on too long!

I loved the ending But I agree it had been a bit to samey for the last couple of seasons, even though there were some superb episodes in both of those series'.

There was a series BEFORE Lois and Clark, just as that was before Smallville. It was called Superboy and it covered his college years and it ran for four seasons.

Don't really want to spoil it for the OP in case they give it a try but I felt there could have been a more gradual transition to the climax given how much dross there had been previously in the closing episodes. It just seemed a bit of a waste. Didn't they lose the original writing/production team in the last season or two or am I mistaken?

But as a whole I thought it was a good show.

Lois and Clark has really dated, and Hatcher's Lois always got on my nerves a bit. But, in its day, it was a decent show and always worth a watch.

And let's not forget, it did give us the greatest ever scene from ANY version of Superman, from the comics to TV to animation to the movies... http://youtu.be/i4Nov7vSkmU
