1. Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt has ordered an investigation into Global Radio's £70m deal to acquire GMG Radio, on the grounds of potential competition and plurality issues. The secretary of state has issued an intervention notice ordering media regulator Ofcom to conduct an investigation into potential media plurality issues raised by combining the largest and third largest radio groups in the UK. However, Global Radio's deal to buy GMG Radio has been completed and cannot be de-railed by any potential regulatory issues. Global – the parent company of brands including Capital, Heart and Classic FM – announced the deal to takeover GMG Radio's Smooth and Real Radio brands in late June. Global Radio has already applied for the deal to be put through a fast-track investigation process by the Competition Commission. More.

2. Heart and Capital owner Global Radio has reported pre-tax losses of £27.7m for the year to the end of March thanks to a substantial payment to shareholders, while underlying profits grew by 12.5% to £56.6m. Global Radio reported a 5.2% year-on-year increase in total revenues to £209.4m. Ad revenues rose by a healthy 6.57% year on year to £193.1m, ahead of the growth across the radio market of 5.9%. Adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation, a key underlying metric of profitability, rose by 12.5% from £50.3m to £56.6m. More.

3. A group of volunteers are planning a new online radio station for the West Country. West Country Radio plans to launch on August 13th providing local news and content the South West of England. The station says: “As FM radio figures remain on the decline in many areas and formerly ‘local’ stations now remote their outputs from central studios such as Milton Keynes and London, West Country Radio promises to bring the LOCAL back to radio, with real personality driven shows and informative programming. More.

4. BBC Commissioning has released tender details of the new all-local radio evening programme, which is set to start on January 7th 2013. The speech-led show, to be broadcast on all 39 local radio stations in England, will air from 7pm till 10pm. Applications are invited from all independent production companies who can clearly demonstrate relevant experience and expertise, the BBC says. All offers should reach them by 12 noon on August 23rd 2012, with decisions made by September 14th More.

5. Radio freelancers will for the first time be eligible for up to £1,500 worth of funding for training from the BBC and Creative Skillset. Experienced freelancers will be able to use the funds to pay for 80% of their training costs (up to the £1,500 maximum) for courses in areas that have been identified by a panel as priorities for the industry. Funding is available for courses that cover craft & technical skills including editing, social media, multiplatform content development and distribution and sound engineering, or business, teamwork and management skills. More

6. Plans to extend local digital radio coverage moved a step closer today as Government, the BBC and commercial operators signed a joint agreement, establishing the framework for up to £21 million of new investment in radio infrastructure. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishes an agreement in principle to fund the build-out of local DAB to FM equivalences over the next 5 years, with a commitment to consider further funding if necessary. The MoU also means at least five new local multiplexes, including in Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire, will be launched within 18 months. In addition, the MoU confirms the Government’s commitment to a decision on radio switchover in 2013. More

7. Radioplayer is to open up its service to non-Ofcom licensed stations, but initially only 30 slots are being offered. Any stations interested in joining – for a fee – can fill out an application for review. The online player currently features over 300 Ofcom licensed live stations, 15,000 on-demand items, and attracts 7 million regular listeners. More

Newsie Bits

1. The Church of England has sold all of its shares in News Corporation because it fears Rupert Murdoch's media empire has failed to learn lessons from the phone-hacking scandal. The church first raised concerns about the News of the World's "reprehensible and unethical" conduct more than a year ago, and had been trying to force News Corp into improving its corporate governance. However, the CofE on Tuesday said in a statement that it was "not satisfied that News Corporation had shown, or is likely in the immediate future to show, a commitment to implement necessary corporate governance reform." The church's investment bodies, the Church Commissioners and the Church of England Pensions Board, announced the sale of their total £1.9m shareholdings, which represent 0.005% of News Corp's total publicly traded stock. More.

2. In an email to BBC staff on Monday 6th August, BBC Director-General Mark Thompson announced that Roger Mosey, the BBC's current Director of London 2012, is to be appointed Acting Director of BBC Vision. More.

3. BT has confirmed that its bundled YouView package will launch in the autumn and is being positioned as the next evolution of the Freeview service. YouView is launching ahead of the new BT Vision 2.0 platform, which will initially be separate from YouView itself as Gavin Patterson, CEO, BT retail explained in an investor call: “The Vision 2.0 portal will feature within our YouView proposition and ultimately the two will completely converge into a single proposition later next year. More.

4. Following a consultation earlier in the year, from lunchtime on Wednesday 19th September, you will have to retune to get the new numbers allocated to some Freeview channels; in particular those used for News, Adult, Children and high definition services. More.

5. DMOL, the industry backed organisation for the management of the UK DTT platform, has published the findings of its review into the Freeview numbering system. In changes slated to be introduced on 19th September, DMOL plans to create additional capacity for new services and make the guide easier to navigate. As part of the update new channel numbers will be reserved for public service local TV channels. These are 8 in England and Northern Ireland and 45 in Wales and Scotland, such a scheme as long been favoured by government as part of its plans to create a nationwide chain of local TV services. More.

6. Connect TV, which runs IP channels in tandem with the Freeview DTT platform, says it is on track to offer double the number of Freeview channels by the end of the year. It has recently added the Christian Channel as well as Arabic and Islamic content, joining the existing Polska Plus service. “The latest launches demonstrate the value of our platform and now brings the number of channels on the Connect TV platform to 70, so we’ve passed Freeview and are ahead of schedule to meet our launch promise of doubling the size of the terrestrial platform by the end of 2012,” said Phil Walder, managing director, Connect TV. 7. ITV will roll out its new online pay player on PCs before it becomes available on other computers and mobile devices this autumn. The UK commercial broadcaster’s player, which is in its final trial stages, will initially offer customers the chance to rent single episodes and box sets before rolling out as a subscription service. Rental prices will range from 50p (US78¢) per episode to between £2.99 and £4.00 for an entire season. It will also provide an ad-supported seven-day catch-up service that is free of charge, and give viewers the chance to see episodes of their favourite shows before their terrestrial debuts. More.

8. Ten per cent of the UK’s fixed lines – equivalent to over 2 million subscriptions – were already ‘superfast’, with download speeds of over 25 Mbps, as of the beginning of July. According to research published by Point Topic, there are now 21.3 million fixed broadband lines in the country. More.

9. Sky is to establish a new distribution arm to market the international rights to its originated content. As part of the move, Sky has completed the acquisition of Parthenon Media Group, a leading independent international distribution and multi-media rights management company. In line with Sky’s on-going commitment to increasing its investment in original content, the creation of a high quality distribution capability will help Sky accelerate its plans for international rights management. This will include playing a central role in the way Sky’s commissioned content is showcased to the international market. The new in-house model will help generate additional revenues from Sky’s content investment from the sale of overseas rights, which will enable Sky to reinvest even more in the UK’s creative economy, for the benefit of customers and content makers alike. More.

10. Cisco has announced that it has completed the acquisition of the NDS Group. With the closure of the transaction, which was first announced on March 15 and is worth around $5 billion (€4.07 billion), Dr Abe Peled, formerly NDS chairman and CEO, has now become senior VP and chief strategist for Cisco’s Video and Collaboration Group, of which Cisco’s Service Provider Video Technology Group (SPVTG) is a part. He will report to Marthin de Beer, senior VP of Cisco’s Video and Collaboration Group. More

11. The House of Lords Communications committee has proposed that broadcasting be moved away from terrestrial delivery and adopt IPTV as its primary means of distribution. Broadband for all – an alternative vision also questions the current government strategy to rollout superfast broadband across the country, suggesting the nation’s interests might be better served by first ensuring universal access. The report says the strongest driver of consumers moving from basic to enhanced broadband would be IPTV service. “It is likely that IPTV services will become ever more widespread, and eventually the case for transferring the carriage of broadcast content, including public service broadcasting, from spectrum to the internet altogether will become overwhelming.” More

Based on my last post in the previous thread, I guess eNews Channel could now be added under the launching soon section seeing as e.tv have now confirmed it. (NOTE: the channel name will most probably change by the time it launches on Sky as the channel will be rebranded as part of the expansion. The name is as yet not official, but it is expected to be ENC or ENC Africa (or similar) this corresponds to their Ofcom license and one of the domains names for the under construction website (which is now down, previously had a holding/info page)

Apologies
In my haste I overlooked that, you are of course correct.
I'll try and add it for next week if it doesn't launch prior to that.

11.426 V.

'Screenshop 2'.....has now been relabelled as 'speed auction'.

Strange, when you consider that 'Speed Auction' was already on this transponder. The original 'Speed Auction' label must have been removed.

Can I have a symbol rate and FEC for that? Or is it a typo? Not got that frequency in my box.

EDIT: Oh, wait, it's the encrypted ITV one (my Freesat box doesn't save transponders if the first channel scan on them is unsuccesful, even if there are channels just encrypted ones and you've asked for FTA ones!)

EDIT2: 12130 HD flagged.
