Do Forums Store a Whole List of IP Addresses Against Your Username?
Hello Everyone,
I was just wondering if forums store all your IP addresses you logged in from. Or do they just store your latest one? E.g. If i log in at home then log in at my friends house, will both IP addresses be logged against my username or will it just be the latest one? Thanks for your help. |

Can't see any point in storing IP addresses. If your ISP assigns dynamic IP addresses then in theory you may never have the same IP address twice. Which is why blocking a user based only on IP address never works very well.
What they may do however is check if the same user logs on twice at the same time from different addresses. |

there will be basic http logs from the webserver software which can record every request and log its ip address if the admin has set the logging for that level (eats diskspace FAST)
but generally i'd imagine that log ins/out and actual posts will have the ip address logged |

PHPBB forums definitely store every IP address that you've used. I know because I run one myself and i use the list to ban spammers.

It can differ between forum systems but you can usually expect IP addresses to be stored against every post and every login. The forum system I use logs a registration IP and an IP address for every post and every login. If you signed in from another house that IP address would be logged against your profile on my forum.

As for dynamics IP, it's not like the old dial up days when you got a new one each time most people with a permanently on ADSL/Cable connection will have the same IP for years. I certainly have. |
