'Geri was Lady Gaga before Lady Gaga was'.
Thanks - you have made my year - the best satirical comment I have ever read on here, ever. I mean you are joking, right?? ![]() ![]() Halliwell is a fairly pretty non descript woman who through luck, sheer determination and I don't doubt, some chutzpah, made a fortune singing sometimes (if they were lucky) in tune in The Spice Girls and being a total narcissist. Gaga IS a total narcissist; the difference is, Gaga is phenomenally talented. In some ways, her costumes and image annoy me, because they detract from her songwriting and her singing - however, I can see why her and her record company decided to go down that route in a competitive market place. The only similarity between Gaga and Halliwell is that they are female and famous. It's like comparing Robert Mugabe to St Francis of Assisi. |

But who played a massive part of Britian the 90's? so you would rather just ignore history then? Weird.

I was just watching the news where they showed a snippet of the Spice Girls infront of the press
They were all smiling except Posh, she stood there with that sour looking pout of hers looking like she has been slapped with a stocking full of pish |

Gaga's songs are also really NOT all that. Rihanna and Katy Perry have a better back catalog Gaga is way overhyped into something she just isn't. Strip away the crazy clothes and you have an average run of the mill pop star singing average run of the mill songs. |

Completely disagree. Rihanna - a better back catalogue? Please.. If she's not tweeting about 'hatahz' with a bong in her hand, she's singing mindless Calvin Harris produced pap. Katy Perry has good songs but not a patch on Gaga. Yes, Gaga's not a great beauty - but she's never claimed to be and has never needed to be. IMHO her songs are glorious. In any case, Halliwell is at the bottom of this gene pool

Gaga isn't all that. Rihanna's Love The Way You Lie part 2, for example, is way better than anything Gaga has ever put out. |

We will have to agree to disagree as IMHO Rihanna makes Cheryl Cole look like Beethoven. |

The opening ceremony was spectacular, the games itself amazing and inspiring, so why are we ruining it all when by having the Spice Girls "perform" I have it on good authority that Posh Spice was dead set against this gig weeks ago when the public had not yet embraced London 2012 and told the organisers that she would not be there It was only after the euphoria after the opening ceremony and Olympic mania, did Posh agree to reform at the closing ceremony.

So were Robson and Jerome, Jive Bunny and Mr Blobby. You don't hear anyone begging for those manufactured 90's throwbacks to stink up the closing ceremony.

Someone on this thread criticised Stella McCartney's involvement in the games - we'll imo at least she's a real, trained fashion designer which is far more than can be said for Posh.Agreed I've never understood why people equate 'success' with quality/talent........the Spice Girls don't represent the best of British to me - they represent hype and souless manufactured pap which was shoved down our throats at the time and is now best forgotten. After all their hard work team GB deserved much better! |

Seriously, both are as sh!te as each other. Who else is definitely performing? Can't they get Iron Maiden on? They're a decent British band! If Girls Aloud or Cole walk on stage my TV is gonna get my foot through it

"1. Iron Maiden - Collective age of 335. Hobbling in at number one is Iron Maiden. You''re probably going to say that they''ve won because they''ve got more members than any of the others, and you''d be right. But with an average age of 56, it''s still pretty impressive that they''re still touring. My dad''s 62 and he has trouble getting the washing off the line"

What is all this "impact" and "success" bollocks that people keep spouting about? If that's what it is all about, then a crap load of real bands would've got the nod ahead of them.
They never have and never will be on the same level as The Rolling Stones... who not only inspired generations of new bands, but after 50 years they still continue to sell out every stadium around the world. People can talk up these crappy girls all they like, but the reality is they were just a big fish in a small pond. Start talking about the bigger scale of every British act out there, then they'd be lucky to make the top 10000. |

I was a child/teenager of the 80s and they did - what they didn't have was they hype and and nonsense around them that the Spice Girls had to resort to! Bananarama are listed in the Guiness book of world records as the 'all female group with the most chart entries in the world' - so they had a global impact too! Spice Girls might have sold more albums but Banarama had more chart entries!
