Adice please on Freezers
I have a chest Freezer, about 18 years old, not frost free. Recently I noticed it freezes up quicker than before. So don't know if it's getting too old. I used to be able to defrost just twice a year, but 6 weeks ago I defrosted it and the ice is about 1cm all around the sides. I know when the warm weather the motor is on a lot of the time, and I do make sure there is enough space at the back and sides.
I have always tried to keep it full, but then looking on some websites, some say to keep it tightly packed, and others to keep a bit of space. I read there was a test it say if you run a bank note between the seal and the cabinet and it moves easily, then the seal is not doing it's job. Can anyone vouch if this is true or not, as I tried this and the note moved very easily Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks |

An 18 year old freezer is well past it's best
![]() A modern one will cost a fraction of the money to run, I would suggest replacing it. |

You can do various tests for the seal, bank note sound slike it would work. But icing up quickly could well mean you need to get a new one I hate throwing things away but they are cheaper now and not worth fixing we are told.

Snowiris, it's a Servis.
I too hate throwing things away. Looks like it's a replacement job. Thanks for all your messages. .. |

That sounds as if it's probably the door seal. A new freezer might be a more cost effective solution than replacing the seal on the old freezer.

Try a new door seal before you buy a new freezer. If you can get one for it that is.

Servis went bust years ago (though Vestel have just bought the name and have started making things under that name again) so the odds of getting a new seal are pretty thin.
I hate to dispose of good stuff, but it does sound like it's well past it I'm afraid. |
