Continual Blue Screens of Death
Yesterday, my laptop started to BSOD on me every time I turned it on. The only thing that I have done recently is run CCleaner [a full clean], install Chrome 21 and uninstall a Norton programme that was installed via Adobe Reader for some reason.
So far I have had two different Blue Screens: BAD_BOOT_HEADER and MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. The first BSOD kept appearing until I did a System Restore back to the 8th. Now, MEMORY_MANAGEMENT keeps showing up - after the laptop killing of all current running programs [Windows Explorer, Windows Visual CC++ etc.] Any idea what is going on? I've been having the .NET issue [Windows Update trying to install the update constantly], if but it never affected the laptop before. I'm running Windows 7 x64 on an ASUS X53E. |

If you haven't reinstalled Windows in the past year or two, now would be a good time.
Backup all your stuff, and follow the Acer instructions for a factory restore. |

Only thing i can add is make sure memory in fitted securely into slot ,not sure what slots laptop has (desktop here) but it won't take long the check,if your have to do a system restore ,dont do factory restore do manufacture restore that way it will keep all your drivers and you'll only need windows update run ,do it overnight if it will need rebooting a lot . good luck. |

How do you understand the difference between a 'factory restore' and a 'manufacture restore'? The same thing surely? |

I only got the laptop at the end of February, so I shouldn't be having to reinstall Windows anytime soon. However, it looks like it might be my only option as I haven't a clue how to stop the BSODs... the type of BSOD seems to change every time one happens.

Are there any clues in Reliability Monitor? Have you had a look at the Windows Logs, Application, Security & System and the Diagnostics-Performance Operational log? Look for Critical error conditions and make a note of the event IDs and when they happened. See if any patterns emerge.

After I updated Chrome to version 21 my laptop kept freezing if I used Chrome for more than a few minutes, the only thing I could do was press the power button. I stopped using Chrome and I've had no more crashes *touch wood* It's a long shot I know, but try completely uninstalling Chrome and do a clean install if it's your main browser.

Fingers crossed, but things are working smoothly for the time being. I did have one BSOD today - BAD_POOL_HEADER.
I've noticed that IE9 keeps crashing when opening websites. Especially Google sites... |

Test the RAM (either with Memtest or by running the built in Windows Memory Diagnostic) and then test the hard drive (diagnostics tool from the drive manufacturer's website). |

I realise it's not perfect, but one BSOD in a day is better than one every 10 minutes. I've not had another since yesterday afternoon, but I'll run the checks.

You need to follow the advice that's been given and provide us with feedback. Have you tested the RAM and hard drive yet? What about the Windows logs - there could be relevant info there?
This kind of problem can either be software or hardware related. Restoring to factory defaults should either fix software problems or prove that it's hardware. If the same faults occur after a factory restore, you can get it sorted out under warranty. But you will of course need to be sure that the fault isn't caused by any software that you've added after the restore. |

"pool" suggests unallocated disk blocks. hence a memory management problem. ie virtual memory troubles. which is consistent with other info. not that this helps.
u might try running a freeware version of one of the disk defagmenter programmes. see if that helps. if not then try chkdsk to sort out file system inconsistencies. might have no effect but should do no harm. as said various standard system logfiles - operating by default unless u switched them off - may hold clues. bad boot sector is nasty and i would think "virus". try usual stuff ie scan with malwarebytes etc ....... |

do the hardware tests but such errors are relatively rare compared with software problems .........

I never made recovery disks as I don't keep files on my laptop so I have nothing to lose if things go tits up. Surely I can just re-install Windows via Recovery in System Restore? |

This should be one of the first things you do when you get a laptop that doesnt come with its own disks. Of all the pottential hardware problems, the hard disk failing is one of the most common. Whilst the drives themselves are reasonably cheap and usually easy enough to replace, not having the correct media to put the OS back on creates a lot of unnecessary faffing about.

Find out the make of your hard disk by clicking Start and then typing dev in the Search box. One of the top group of answers will say Device Manager. Click on that and when the window opens expand Disk drives. Go to Google or search engine of your choice and type the letter and number combination of the drive followed by hdd. For example mine says WDC WD6400BEVT and this is a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 640GB. Probably somewhere on the result page there will be a link to the makers site.

That is the kind of HDD is have in my laptop. I've had 4 BSODs this morning alone, and Shockwave keeps crashing as well as IE9 and Chrome. One BSOD said IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, which I've not seen before. I'm set the laptop to run a chkdsk when it reboots, so I'll post what that says here. EDIT: It said that everything was fine. "Volume clear". |

This is exactly what happens to m when I try to run the Memory Diagnostics. Blank screen, major fans. Could this mean anything in particular is wrong? |

It's sounding more and more like a RAM fault. Download Memtest from the link you just posted. Burn it to disk, boot from it and just leave it run. Any RAM errors will show up in red. You'll need to leave Memtest run at least overnight. If you're lucky, errors will show up quickly and you'll know startight away that it's the RAM. You can then get it sorted out under warranty.
