1. The digital switch-over has quietly commenced at four BBC local radio stations in England, RadioToday.co.uk can reveal. BBC Radio Kent, BBC Radio Lincolnshire, BBC Radio Merseyside and BBC Radio Nottingham have all stopped broadcasting regular programmes on medium wave, instead directing listeners to FM or DAB. It’s part of a five week trial to make savings and to find out if listeners will miss or complain about the lack of AM services. The BBC told RadioToday.co.uk: “MW services mainly duplicate what is already available on FM and DAB, and most listeners will be able to hear their local stations on FM. The BBC is also committed to a full roll out of local radio stations across the DAB network. If local radio is not already available on DAB it will be in the future. Full Details

2. Southport’s Dune FM has stopped broadcasting after Ofcom had to physically remove the station’s transmitter. The company which owned the licence was subject to a winding-up order on July 9th, meaning licence became void. Ofcom rules state that a company which has been wound-up cannot own a broadcasting licence. The regulator had been in touch with the station recently to request they stopped broadcasting – a request which was apparently ignored by those in charge at Dune FM. More.

3. Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt has ordered an investigation into Global Radio's £70m deal to acquire GMG Radio, on the grounds of potential competition and plurality issues. The secretary of state has issued an intervention notice ordering media regulator Ofcom to conduct an investigation into potential media plurality issues raised by combining the largest and third largest radio groups in the UK. However, Global Radio's deal to buy GMG Radio has been completed and cannot be de-railed by any potential regulatory issues. Global – the parent company of brands including Capital, Heart and Classic FM – announced the deal to takeover GMG Radio's Smooth and Real Radio brands in late June. Global Radio has already applied for the deal to be put through a fast-track investigation process by the Competition Commission. More.

4. BBC Commissioning has released tender details of the new all-local radio evening programme, which is set to start on January 7th 2013. The speech-led show, to be broadcast on all 39 local radio stations in England, will air from 7pm till 10pm. Applications are invited from all independent production companies who can clearly demonstrate relevant experience and expertise, the BBC says. All offers should reach them by 12 noon on August 23rd 2012, with decisions made by September 14th More.

5. Radioplayer is to open up its service to non-Ofcom licensed stations, but initially only 30 slots are being offered. Any stations interested in joining – for a fee – can fill out an application for review. The online player currently features over 300 Ofcom licensed live stations, 15,000 on-demand items, and attracts 7 million regular listeners. More

Newsie Bits

1. Sky and UPC Renew Agreement for Wholesale Distribution of Sky Channels in Ireland New enhanced deal sees a range of Sky’s HD channels become available to UPC customers for the first time. Sky and UPC have concluded a commercial agreement that will see UPC continue to offer its customers in the Republic of Ireland a range of Sky’s most popular entertainment, news, sports and movies channels through its cable TV service. As part of an enhanced agreement, High Definition (HD) versions of a range of Sky’s channels will also become available to UPC customers for the first time, including Sky 1 HD, Sky Living HD, Sky Arts 1 & 2 HD, Sky News HD, Sky Sports News HD, Sky Sports 1 & 2 HD and the full suite of Sky Movies channels. More.

2. Ofcom has approved an application by Everything Everywhere, owner of the Orange and T-Mobile networks, to use its existing 1800 MHz spectrum to deliver 4G services. Following a consultation, Ofcom has concluded that varying Everything Everywhere's 1800 MHz licences now will deliver "significant benefits" to consumers and outweigh any competition concerns. More.

3. ITV has denied it is interested in airing any of BT's Premier League matches, but admitted that it is planning to pitch for the £100m-plus contract to produce the telecoms company's live football coverage. BT, which owns the BT Vision subscription video-on-demand service, will formally put out a three-year tender, valued at between £100m and £132m, for the contract to produce its football coverage and has opened early stage talks with ITV about a potential partnership. ITV intends to pitch for the business. Production subsidiary ITV Studios already makes the English-language commentary for Al-Jazeera's Sports, fronted by Gary Lineker, Ruud Gullit, Alan Shearer and Terry Venables, for expats throughout the Middle East. More.

4. Sky has lodged an appeal with the body that co-ordinates the Freeview electronic programme guide (EPG) over plans to shift Sky News further down the guide. DTT Multiplex Operators Limited (DMOL), the Ofcom-licensed provider of Freeview EPG services, has published a series of proposed changes to Freeview channel numbering. The proposals involve various services, including News and Children’s being moved further down the EPG in order to make space for more ‘general entertainment’ networks and a new local television channel. The new numbering is due to come into force on September 19th, but the proposed changess have been put on hold pending the outcome of an appeal by Sky. More.

5. The UK will have the fastest broadband of any major European country by 2015, according to Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt. In a speech at Google’s Campus building in London, he reiterated that he wanted to bring high-speed broadband – which he defined as greater than 24 Megabits per second – to more than 90 per cent of the country. More.

6. Sky has taken the time to brush up its iOS app, adding one major boon for iPad owners – the ability to use their tablet as a fancy remote control for their Sky+ HD box. Using the new app, you can hook your iPad up to your HD box and then swipe up or down to change the channel, and generally tap your screen to access other functions, in a suitably swish manner. You can also view the Sky schedule on your iPad, tag programmes for recording, and all the usual malarkey. Sky has also given the appearance of the app a brush up, and the interface in general, so it’s a facelift all round. Sounds like good stuff to us. More.

7. A new method of projecting 3D images on to cinema screens has been trialled, which does away with the need for glasses. Despite many cinemagoers' reservations about the technology, 3D is big business in movies and many a cinema chain is cashing in on the tech, putting up prices for 3D movies and adding another premium on top of this with the purchase of 3D glasses. This could be set to change, however, if Seoul National University has anything to do with it. More.

8. Ofcom reveals details of 57 bids for licences to run services in 21 towns and cities, including London and Glasgow. The London Evening Standard, former BBC Trust chairman Sir Michael Lyons, and ex-Channel 4 chairman Luke Johnson are among those bidding to run one of Jeremy Hunt's new local TV channels in the UK capital. Their involvement was revealed on Tuesday as Ofcom published details of 57 bids for licences to run local TV services in 21 cities and towns across the UK, including Glasgow, Manchester and Leeds. The media regulator has received a further four bids for licences to operate local TV multiplexes. Ofcom has received five bids to run a new local service in London, with a decision on the winner to be made in the autumn following a "beauty parade" in which applicants' business plans are scrutinised. More.

9. Worldwide shipments of flat-panel TVs recovered in the second quarter after a disappointing start to the year. According to preliminary data in the new Worldwide Monthly TV Tracker issued by IHS-owned Displaybank, they rose to 48.9 million units in Q2, up 3.6% on the figure of 47.2 million three months earlier. Within the Q2 total, LCD TV shipments rose by 3.4%, following a 29.3% drop in the first quarter. More.

10. DMOL, the industry backed organisation for the management of the UK DTT platform, has published the findings of its review into the Freeview numbering system. In changes slated to be introduced on 19th September, DMOL plans to create additional capacity for new services and make the guide easier to navigate. As part of the update new channel numbers will be reserved for public service local TV channels. These are 8 in England and Northern Ireland and 45 in Wales and Scotland, such a scheme as long been favoured by government as part of its plans to create a nationwide chain of local TV services. More. and Following a consultation earlier in the year, from lunchtime on Wednesday 19th September, you will have to retune to get the new numbers allocated to some Freeview channels; in particular those used for News, Adult, Children and high definition services. More.

Loaded TV to be launched on Sky in the autumn. I got details of a new programme though today.

The Pitch from Loaded TV
Want to pitch your entertainment idea to a panel of industry experts?

You will have 3 minutes to pitch your entertainment idea to a panel of industry experts.

It can be anything - underwater glove puppets, dancing elephants, flea circus, film, TV idea, etc.

If you win them round, they could offer anything from help, advice and contacts to an offer to turn your entertainment idea into a reality.

The show is going to be broadcast on Loaded TV,
a channel that's launching in the Autumn on SKY ch 200.

I'm sure DS members could come up with something

Great but how long will it last?

FHM TV (Music channel failed)

Nuts TV was axed by Turner.

I can't see Loaded TV being on air long either.

Assuming this is encrypted still, does a FTV card open it or full level subscription card?? I wonder if this will be the Paralympics mosaic HD channel for red button selection from Sky STB's?

my Freesat card does not open it. full sub does. The ECM length suggests you need entertainment extra + HD pack .

Also now showing full British Eurosport 2 in HD

7854, 7855 & 7856 (on Eurobird 28A, 11.469, H) are showing those Deltatre Lines 1 - 4 test cards. The text is scrolling downwards, and it cuts to a black screen on 7854 then returns to test card a few seconds later. Anyone have any ideas why the channels switch off at 6pm?

Could be the OB's signature test card for whoever is covering the paralympics. Just a guess hunch.

Hi! All
Is TCM HD unreceivable on some boxes as I have tried tuning it in but it comes up: No Channels Found, does anyone know the date it is due to launch on Sky and the channel number?.

TCM HD will be on the same Channel Number TCM is on, on HD boxes that is, on SD boxes it will be at the end of the Movies section,
on HD boxes TCM SD will move to the end of the Movies Section also

This is because Sky swaps the HD version for the SD version on Sky HD boxes

HD channels are not generally tunable manually on Sky HD boxes as they tend to use parameters outside the options provided for manual tuning. You can only manually tune symbol rates 22.0 and 27.5. HD channels are generally on transponders with symbol rates of 23.0 or 29.5. The box can display them - you just can't tune them manually.

Based on #18 above launch date could be as early as next Tuesday 28th August but possibly more likely a week later.

I wonder if this is for Eurosport 2HD, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this launching on Sky in the next Month??

Looks like all the 78xx SID's now have "programmes launch on Thurs" ready for the Paralympics.

Welcome Eutelsat 28B, which has now arrived at 28.5e. An unexpected development but one which makes sense since 28A/Eurobird is getting old.

British Eurosport 2 is launching in HD around 3 September I think. This is by the way a full simulcast of British Eurosport 2.

BTW TCM in HD has different output at present to the usual TCM channel. This will probably change though before it launches.
