Yup - I was out yesterday but have just caught up - saw the post and managed to avoid looking at the pdf until I'd watched on iPlayer. Love the thread, I agree that it's generally respectful and lovely to contribute to. Slightly disappointed for James but John's final bake did look spectacular. I really like the idea of Cathryn and Sarah Jane having a stall together. GBBO still one of my favourite cooking programmes and hope it keeps its charm and integrity, whatever channel it's on.
When I saw that clip of Cathryn and Sarah Jane slapping that pastry about and then it flew across the room and ended up on the floor - that was my favourite moment between those two!

He's on a hiding to nothing - John has a boyfriend.

... and Nick Grimshaw
Who's Nick Grimshaw?

I'm sure it's been mentioned, but wasn't the trophy this year much better than that awful monstrosity from last year?

Super excited to have tickets for Good Food Show in Glasgow tomorrow, can't wait to see Paul Hollywood & Mary Berry in the Supertheatre, gutted that none of the finalists will be there though, got an email to say all 3 will be at NEC show end Nov.

James will be there..
@bakingjames: Thanks to the wonderful @Hollywoodbaker, I'll be loitering around the Good Food Show lobby tomorrow. Look out for the tank top!
I don't know if they'll be doing other things at the event, but Mary & Paul's show cost extra and is now sold out or I would have went.

Didn't miss much. Nick Grimshaw being bland as always and shamelessly flirting with John. But John was very charismatic on the radio even with the inane Grimshaw.

By the way, John was a banker! (There was a post earlier that implied a paper had got this wrong)
He was working as a merchant banker whilst studying for his law degree, but says his heart was never in banking.
So a really clever clogs.

I got this information from the Waitrose Weekend newsheet (where there is an article about him). I don't think that 2 news outlets would be wrong.

But it makes his comment that his mother is at last proud of him really rather odd, don't you think? I mean, he had a good job (if not a widely admired one in the present circs!) and was doing well in a degree. What more could she want?

^^ I must say I felt sorry for him when his Mum said she thought he'd be out in the first round - I thought that was a bit off!
Maybe he's changed direction career wise a few times and he's pleased to have found something he wants to go all the way with, and he feels his Mum is pleased he's finally settled?

I agree it did seem odd though - he was very keen to please her, and it seems sad that he's not had that reassurance before now - if that's the case.

It is difficult to judge from an edited show but it did come over that his family were not entirely supportive of him - even his sister made some derogatory comment about him.

Of course, for all we know, they may in truth be a loving, caring family who just like taking the mickey out of each other (some people, for some reason, seem only to b able to show affection via rudeness!) and they really are proud of him - both before and after the GBBO.

This is very true - especially where Brothers and Sisters are concerned!

I did wonder that, then gave it up as unworthy. He so obviously loves her and wants her approval.

For the love of God people time to get a grip. It's obviously a bit of lighthearted banter and the way the family operates with little digs and deprecating humour.

He stated himself that he left Oxford to be closer to his mum and family and what person doesn't want their parent's approval. He's obviously completely fine with his sexuality and that doesn't happen when parents aren't and has stated that he started baking as therapy with his mother when his parents got divorced.

Let's not get hysterical, they're obviously a deeply loving family, who like a bit of banter and what parent wouldn't be slightly concerned about their child giving up a safe job in financial law, or rather not going down that route in order to bake cakes.

There are so many people out there with grossly abusive families and parents, John clearly isn't one of them.
