Absolute shocker. Even with all that's been going on in the last few weeks, I didn't see that coming.
That said, my quite large local Blockbuster shut down about 6 months ago. There was never anyone in there. It was always boiling hot and stank of BO. Blu-ray prices were a joke. |

I am surprised they lasted this long. A dinosaur of a business model which failed to adapt to modern living.

No surprise, places like that have had their day. Why travel to Blockbusters to rent a film out, and then travel back the following day to return it, when you can watch new releases though Virgin/Sky/BT etc for the same price as a rental and all at the push of a button. Good riddance to them.

I thought they already had gone into administration years ago, as I noticed less and less blockbusters around my area well it seemed like there was less

If a business can't keep up with modern lifestyles and needs, then it deserves to go bust.

Wonder who will buy it? Maybe Tesco, they could use it to replace their DVD rental sevice currently operated by LoveFiLM and rebrand BlinkBox to Blockbuster. Some of the stores could be taken up by their associated coffee chain company Harris & Hoole too.

I haven't used Blockbusters in years but it's a shame to see them go. I remember, particularly during my secondary school days, renting out many a movie and game from them.
Though, I seem to recall talk of them being in trouble a while ago? Or was that in the USA? |

Not surprising as Blockbusters almost went into administration over ten years ago. There was a lot fewer branches since then. I'm surprised it's still around, though.

Their online shop had been very cheap recently so I had been buying from them rather than other retailers...must have been out for a last grab of money!

The usual staples of the high street like the record chains and video (of course dvd/blu-ray) shops have all but vanished, part of me feels really sad about that, the shops that provided our childhood haunts and memories are fast disappearing...

About 14-15 years ago I had first discovered Jackie Chan movies, so used to rent more than a few HK movies from them.

Nice to see they are still accepting their vouchers and points on reward cards, I wonder how they can when Comet, HMV and Jessops did not?

Apparently a part of their business was still profitable - and they have cash in the bank. They've chosen administration as it's a cheaper way of restructuring (ie closing shops) than doing it any other way.

Back in the VHS days, I was always going to Blockbuster.
I am surprised they lasted this long though as their fate was pretty much doomed as soon as the gap between rental and buying became nonexistent. |

I didn't know they were still in business. Never been in one as I recall (except perhaps as a mystery shopper).

Will this cause anything to happen to their online rental service? I'm on that at the moment because there is no film rental near me and really don't want to go back to lovefilm.
