What was the spade used for? shoveling horse manure? burying prostitutes?
I would not be surprised if, as a farmer, he always carries welly boots and a proper spade. The plastic ones used for snow clearance would not be much use for some of the implied uses because they would break if you tried digging into (probably hard) ground.
