Daybreak doing this now. Saying paedophiles are less likely to try to arrange a meeting with their victims, and more likely to do grooming entirely online, to encourage the young person to send them sexually explicit photos of themselves.

Thinking of it from their point of view it seems a little strange, that. You'd think they'd be craving the physical contact, if their so sexually attracted but I can only presume they think its a risk not worth taking and worry about being found out, so they just try and get as much remotely and fantasise about it instead ( ew ).

I remember being frustrated with people I communicated with online at the time, they'd talk about travelling to be with me and spending time together, going to talk to the family and then I'd go off with them and start some new life or what-not, like I really wanted at that time *cringe*

There would always be reasons why they couldn't travel though - one guy who was supposedly only a few years older than me, they supposedly tried something like 3 times to travel to see me and every time they got bad news or had an accident the day before - I smelt a fish (as it were) and stopped talking to them, then one day someone contacts me saying their a relative of this guy, they found out they'd been talking to me for the last year or two and they wanted me to know that they'd given me a photo of someone else, the person wasn't who they said they were, it was someone older yadda yadda. Considering I'd stopped talking to older people before thinking I became close to him (thinking this would be different and I wanted to get away from those other people who made me feel uncomfortable and I started feeling guilty like I was dirty for talking to such adults), I was pretty humiliated!

I confronted him with it and they said its a load of nonsense, that they'd had some spat with him and was just trying to get back at him, don't believe them yadda yadda

I think alot of what goes on, online, is like some fantasy trip for people but its a bit embarrassing when the other person like believes them feels like I spent a good three years trusting in some people and heck knows who they even were in reality, or if they meant any or some of what they said. Makes me angry, that. I tell you what though - he sounded like a teenager on the phone, so, who knows.

Ok I was a late teen and I doubt that guy was a paedo, they didn't really talk like really pornographically or anything like that, though they would talk about being affectionate and things but I think there is some form of shame about having these kinds of, kinda seemingly long term relationships of some sort when at the end your left thinking I eventually trusted and confided in someone and a few sentences from someone else makes you think you have no idea who that person maybe was - its bizarre. Friends said not to talk to such people but you just think this is different though - teens don't wanna listen to sensible advice lol deary me...

I suppose I was thinking more generally - what if someone who doesn't have kids offered to babysit so the parents could get a much needed night out? if the person helped out or worked at a school or was otherwise known for being around kids in another situation then you'd presume their trustworthy in that situation, wouldn't you? and their technically offering to help, so you'd probably be thankful for the offer... if the child said they'd been invited to that persons house to have a look around or something, that may seem more suspicious?

I suppose the obvious difference is if someone offers to help after hearing the parents really wanted a night out, thats stepping in and helping out but otherwise it seems more like they may have another motive if they suggest to a child to visit them at home for some uknown reason. I can't think of any time a member of staff at school suggested we visited them, though I used to fancy the PE teacher and tried to find his address in the phone book - hah! I was a teen and he was in his early 20s though lol!

She seems to have perhaps a muddled recollection of things - maybe she'd claim it was the scandal that brought back repressed memories allowing her to identify him, although most people would likely be sceptical of that (ie. it may seem a bit convenient).

I do think your mind can play tricks, especially if your thinking back to very traumatic times I'd imagine - it may be hard to distinguish the full truth. It may not be done with any kind of malicious intent or they may not even realise that their memories aren't accurate necessarily, I suppose...who knows.

I keep editing this post as I can't decide whether to mention things or not, its kind of doing my head in(!) someone should just say if im talking about myself too much...seems annoyingly selfish and darn long posts(!)

I don't know much about the subject to have an honest opinion of it. I know it is controversial and the researchers didn't reach a conclusion about it yet. I didn't know it was about what causes it. Anyway, I don't really have an opinion.

It is controversial for other reasons too. A lot of psychiatrists don't believe it exists at all. They would aver that it is a type of borderline personality disorder and the actual personality split has not happened and the individual is knowingly playing a role.

It could be she repressed memories of him and the scandal brought them all back. There is no way to know.

I know memory is a dangerous territory and it can play tricks on us. I'm not prone to exaggerations but there were two or three I remembered things that didn't happen at all

Its all a bit strange...hard to know what to say really. The only times I've heard mention of Multiple Personality Disorder is when I saw an interview with a man who had some ridiculous supposed alter personalities, on Oprah - he talked about becoming a toddler while driving a car and nearly crashing it. Then there are movies about people who suffer from it.

People also argue that amnesia is fairly uncommon, don't they? or maybe not amnesia as such but that phenomenon of waking up after a coma and not remembering your own identity at all. Its usually short term memory thats lost and not so often longer, older memories?.

The little know about it is that some people diagnosed with DID have "memory lapses" that could be attributed to other disorders. Well, it may be a real personality disorder or it may be what you said. I really don't know.
