DDL was great but I'd agree the film was boring. The story was told in the most long winded way possible and I didnt think it was a great character study on Lincoln. It felt pretty empty to me, it should have shown more about the effects of the war and slavery on people, it just bogged everything down in the politics alone it seemed.

I was expecting this to be very 'wordy' but not so boring, just didn't feel any emotion or passion from the cast, DDL, looked the part, but for me, that was it.

I was hoping for something along the lines of Amazing Grace, about William Wilberforce and his campaign to end the Slave Trade....emotional wreck after that film....with Lincoln I felt nothing at the END.

5/10
Just been to see it - and you describe it perfectly for me. Very disappointed.

It was so dull, I actually dropped off after about an hour. I would have walked out, but my husband had paid, so I thought I'd better endure it. However, that is the first film in my life I've wanted to leave due to sheer boredom - and I'm such a history nut really.

I didn't like the portrayal of his wife - she came across as such a shrew and very bitter. Nothing like the accounts I've read about her, which portray her much better. Perhaps if they had alluded more to the tragedies in her life (death of 2 sons at that point, and the youngest one had a cleft palate, hare lip and a severe speech impediment, which wasn't shown in the film), then the bitterness would have been more understandable. For me, she didn't come across as supportive at all really.

I was thinking that being shot must have been a relief to Lincoln in the end!

Having seen the film I searched the forum for Lincoln threads and unless I've missed the main one, this short thread appears to be it!

Anyway, the main problem with the film is the lack of tension. Maybe that's why so many people think it's boring: there's no sense that anything other than the "right" outcome will happen. So what if we know that slavery was abolished? We could still be given a few thrills along the way. In fact Day Lewis's achievement is to make the great man seem like a bit of a nerd, always telling interminable stories and mulling things over whilst his wrinkles grow visibly deeper.

It's a good, but not great, film. The guy was shot for his troubles. He deserved better.
