Criminals are human too and many end up that way for lots of different reasons, but you see the world in black and white eh. what sickens me is peoples comments on the lad Ryan. That .lad seemed more harm to himself than to anyone else. He came accross as a sad and damaged individual and all people can do here is judge him as scum and say sick things about his attempts as suicide and self harm. |

There are prisoners who do want to change their lives around and some who getting something useful out of their time incarcerated.
The frustrating programme doesn't seem to want to focus on the rehabillitation side at all. Instead we just the prison officers moaning about their hands being tied behind their backs and those prisoners who should be locked up in secure hospitals. |

I am a prison officer and would like to say that it's nice that a few posters recognize what tough jobs we do.
We are often overlooked in favour of the police, emergency services etc. I chose not to watch the programme this week as I got quite wound up last week by some of the comments on here. A prison is a completely unique environment, a living breathing community all of its own. Unless you've lived in one or worked in one its impossible to really understand the workings of it. As interesting as programmes like this can be, they show an hour out of x amount of months that the camera crew were there - not necessarily a good thing. Anyway, thanks again to all who see what a tough job we do. I for one, appreciate it. |

They should put a noose in each cell, if someone wants to kill themselves it should be their human right to do so, the world would be a better place without a lot of therm, their bodies could be used for organ donation to actually do some good to society.

I saw this show again last night and Idid find it quite sad.
I do feel for the prison officers who have to deal with a person in that mental state. It must be tough With regards to Ryan I really felt for him, hes not a bad person he obviously got himself into a situation and landed in prison but the programme said he was due out in less than a year (Or was that somebody else?). I felt for him I really did he clearly has demons to deal with, nobody would attempt to take their own life especially the amount of times he did it unless they were desperate. I hope he sorts himself out The lad with the gf, good luck to him I hope that he gets out and they ger married, hes clearly a focus for him and a good influence. |

I know the girl well. She actually met him when visiting a friend in prison. Started writing to each other but her family were very against it. To many obstacles in their way and she eventually realised it wouldn't work and finished it after he was relocated closer to home (100 miles away). Her family are relieved but not happy with her appearing on the telly. The final straw was when it was announced at the end of the programme that they were engaged.

Ok, i've read these comments and ive gotta say some of you lack the compassion to be classed as human.
Ive been in prison many many times when i was younger and its a depressing s**t heap. I see theirs a prison officer commenting and as an ex con i have to say i could never do that mans job in a million years. Yes, you do get violent thugs in prison, but for the majority its mainly drug addicts who are in their for theft and who are more often than not mentally ill. Now then, most of you commenting seem to think everyone who ever gets sentenced by the courts should be given a minimum of life imprisonment for any crime. Fact is you might as well seeing as when you get out of prison with a criminal record your never, ever going to get a job because of the ridiculous CRB checks, so the only option left is to stay on benefits for the rest of your natural born life or commit more crime, go back to prison, commit more crime, hence the revolving door policy that prisons are renowned for. Oh and anyone who suggests that prisoners should have their IEP scheme and all that entails taken away, such as TVs, kettles, duvets etc. should be forced to work in the prison when the inevitable riots and suicides start. |

I agree btw. I've never been to prison, but the comments in this thread as I watched the last episode were disgraceful. I have mental health problems however and so I relate to a lot of the crap that some people in prison will be going through. Most people here have experienced neither prison, nor mental health problems, and are pretty cold-heartedly ignorant to say the least. Best to Ignore them. |

Otherwise have capital punishment for certain crimes and life imprisonment for all crimes, of course then we head towards a US system where over 2million citizens are imprisoned and once they do re-enter society they're no longer able to vote or be a part of society. The tragic fact is that with successive government's cutting funding for specialised hospitals and psychiatric units many people serving time in prison would not that long ago have been sectioned or an alternative to a prison sentence found. Take Ryan, who was only a danger to himself, he shouldn't be in prison, he needs serious help. I'm not saying either that violent, dangerous predatory criminals shouldn't be in prison, but what is needed is an enlightened approach. The majority of those guys in Aylesbury were victims before they became criminals, if you look at their behaviour they're at best emotionally children and if there is any hope to be drawn from such a grim programme it is that reform and rehabilitation are possible. A society that divorces itself from it's criminality, that refuses to take responsibility for it is regressive, a penal system without redemption is a concentration camp. There are sociopaths and psychopaths in London's Square Mile of banks working at top levels of industry whose crimes against humanity make even the most hardened Aylesbury inmate's crimes seem like shoplifting sweets - they'll never be charged, brought to justice or made to answer for their crimes. Why should an overwhelmingly working class population of prisoners be any more answerable for their sins than a Fred Goodwin or Lloyd Blankfein? |

Prisons are to keep the law-abiding people safe not to punish criminals even further. Judge and jury send the offended to prison, it is not an officers job to punish anyone. |

It's good to see the thread swinging away from the hang'em and flog 'em I'm alright jack reactionaries towards talk about rehabilitation and the sensible realisation that revolving door prison systems do no good for anyone and are everyone's problem.
How many of the people on show in programmes like this have come from disfunctional families? Prisons would be empty without inmates who have 'graduated' from the care system and broken or abusive homes........these potential outcomes should be tackled at source and that is via the education system at a very early stage with an eye on the next generation....quite simply : Don't have children unless you intend to bring them up properly. |

There were a number of posts removed earlier by a certain individual who advocated execution, torture etc which thankfully were more or less ignored.
However, one example this person used of a "criminal" who deserved execution was Bashid Mclean who was recently arrested for murdering and dismembering his mother and who posted a photo of himself with his mother's head. On the face of it a terrifyingly depraved criminal, but he's not and thankfully is it appears not being treated as such. Mclean is a schizophrenic with severe behavioural disorders, delusions and psycopathy, who had been off his medication and due to his socio economic background the help both professional and medical that could have kept him on an even keel or at least kept him in check wasn't there. He's now on constant suicide watch is doubly incontinent, what he did was terrible but he's not a criminal, but a severely sick individual who deserves pity, compassion and help. Sadly his fate will most likely be life in a State run psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane, which are pretty horrendous places and it's a tragedy that he's now going to get the help he needed for years when it's too late. |

Further to what you're saying, I wish people would stop and think about what they're saying when they go off about harsher penalties, etc. Prisoners will be released back into society one day. What kind of people do you want them to be? Do you want them to be better educated, "reformed, rehabilitated and redeemed" (to paraphrase Mercier) or do you want them to have been treated like animals and to come out worse than when they went in? |
