Two MGM musical stars are still with us, Jane Powell, who will be 84 in April, and Leslie Caron, who will be 82 in July. Jane is married to former child star Dickie Moore, 88 this year.

I feel very fortunate at 75 to have seen all of these stars in their hey day on the big screen, when cinema's was rightly referred to as "Picture Palaces". I am also lucky to have met many of them, including Barbara Stanwyck, Bette Davis, Deborah Kerr, Joan Fontaine, and Gloria Swanson, and directors Frank Capra and William Wellman. They were all larger than life and had a Star Quality that is sadly missing in the favourites of today. I would not go to the end of the street to see any of them.
wow that's a nice lineup to meet, how was Bette??

Carol Channing is still around at 91.

I met Bette when she appeared at The National Film Theatre in 1971, She was great, very articulate and quite funny.

I asked her if she would like to direct a film, her reply was a very definite, "No, but I wouldn't mind producing, I rather like the idea of bossing a lot of men around."

I saw her again when she appeared at The London Palladium in 1975, but never met her on that occasion.

thanks for replying, nice story, I love Bette Davis, from interviews she seems strong and knew her mind.

Apparently it's nowhere near as bad as is made out.

There is a lot of resentment on Joan's part, but whenever Joan is in Paris, or Olivia is in LA, they are known to visit each other.
Yes, by all accounts, that is right.

I read Joan Fontain's autobiography 'No Red Of Roses' a while back and their feud was very much more in the minds of the publicity departments than in reality prior to their Mother dying in 1975.

Sure they do not like each other. This got worse when their Mother died and Joan was only informed after the funeral had taken place. She was out of the country and Olivia informed her via telegram - by the time she got it the funeral was over. Joan never forgave her sister. They also argued over their mother's treatment (she was v elderly and suffering from cancer) They could not see eye-to-eye on anything at all.

As you said Joan does (or did) visit her sister in Paris when she was there. As does Olivia when she is in California.

I recently picked up a magazine in USA that says Doris Day is now a recluse and not expected to last much longer. Very sad.

At the Oscars this year they cut out a lot of "dearly departed " so that Streisand could sing the tribute .....

This Doris Day recluse stuff is not true, she may not give interviews on camera but she's done them on the phone, especially when that album was out recently, she did a lot of publicity for it

She could look into local unsolved murders while she's there then.

The article was using the word recluse in the sense that she never leaves her home and it also said that she is suffering from ill health.

Many of those I deem to be legends of Hollywood - Davis, Crawford, Monroe, Garland, Wayne, Rogers and Astaire - are, sadly, no longer with us. Jodie Foster deserves a mention.
