There have been a number of Sharon threads since her return to the Square last year...nine months back and the once loved Sharon is no longer loved anymore sadly..

The writers fault or Letitia Dean's herself?

Still Sharon to me can be saved and for that they the TPTB need to go back to basics. There is a whole part of Sharon's life that is still unknown to her and the audience- her Birth Family.

We know that her birth Mum was Carol and that her birth Father was called Gavin but that is all we know, Sharon could have brothers and sisters out there- nephews and nieces even so why has this not be explored? Den and Angie will always be her Mum and Dad but looking at her birth family would add something to her backstory, a chance to create a new Patriarch on the Square should Gavin ever be cast.

Sharon's return has been bogged down with the domination of the Brannings and the Lexi/Lola storyline, Sharon goes from Jack to Phil in an instance without giving Sharon a chance to recover from Jack dumping her.

Where is the strong Independent woman we saw back in 2001, obviously Sharon has been affected by the death of Dennis and the painkiller storyline is playing into that- as an audience we know very little about her backstory over the past seven years- no mention of Michelle, no mention of Vicki, does she know about the paternity of Mark Fowler Jnr? but more importantly Sharon has lost her spark and she needs to recover it but how?

Make her single, get her away from the Brannings and Phil/Lola/Lexi, explore her birth family, bring her friendship with Ian back to the centre of the show. Its sad to see this once iconic character as a victim and Letitia Dean herself deserves better material to work with.

I for one am not giving up on Sharon even if some are and that includes writers who dont seem to care about her anymore...

My opinion.

I'm gonna cut and paste what I wrote in another thread on this subject:

The Sharon thing really annoys me. What do people really expect from her? It’s clear the Dennis’ death has affected her long term and we are now seeing a woman with severe problems. Yes they could’ve written it along the lines of ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ but I’m not sure how realistic that would’ve been.

This is a woman who cradled her dying husband in her arms days after discovering she was pregnant and less than a year after discovering her father had been murdered by her step mum. Factor into that abuse from Grant, her previous fiancé dying in a fire and an alcoholic mother (who subsequently died of the disease) and I think it’s fair to say she might not be coping.

We know at some point she turned to pills to cope – not too unrealistic. We also know she’s moved on from man to man to try and find security – I’m guessing not really loving any of them. Personally I’m liking the fact that they’ve given this some thought – her current personality is no coincidence – it’s a well thought out development based on what she’s been through. I don’t think the forum members are really getting it.

I agree that all that has happened since Dennis' death has made her the person she is today and I agree too that there is no quick fix...but out of despair comes strength and further down the line I would like to see her find that...

I personally think Sharon has been vilified on here and its not fair on the character or Leitita Dean.

YES. YES. YES. YES. YES.

Some people on here expect too much, just love to moan all the time or both

I thought that Letitia was going on a short break?

My guess is Sharon will go into rehab to explain her absence from the screen, and will return more like the 'old' Sharon, and not the Branning clone she became.

It seems Letitia wasn't happy with 'new' Sharon either, and read the riot act to TPTB.

Her 'break' will be probably the same as Billy's and Patrick's break this year. They don't actually leave but don't appear on screen for a while. However she could leave the square like Jack has done.

The last thing the show needs are more long lost family members turning up out of the blue

TPTB need to take one on the chin and admit that they have got it wrong bringing her back . The writing has been awful . Sharon dictating how to care for Lexi to Lola on this eveings show for example .

Its just not worked out I'm afraid . Seems like she's had a Vulcan mind wipe from what I remember of her from previous stints

Sharon's got two half brothers out there (at least) by her birth mother. IIRC Carol (her mother) was pregnant with the second one when they first met but even though they got on OK Carol revealed she had no maternal feelings for Sharon and was worried about her husband finding out so (again IIRC - it was a long time ago!) Sharon walked away and never went back.

I just don't know if it would be a feasible storyline to run (a genetic family member coming looking for her) at the same time as we have the Cora/Ava storyline going on. Plus Sharon seemed to accept the situation and hasn't shown any more interest in them since - Den and Angie were her parents, end of.

Could be interesting further down the line though, a brother gets curious when he finds out he's got a much older sister? But I think they would have to have a gap between Cora/Ava and this one.

I dont agree - you cant compare Sharon to some of the deadwood that is still drifting around Albert Square- she has been badly written and I am glad (hopefully) that Letitia Dean has told the TPTB that she has not been happy with Sharon's character since she returned.

I wouldn't put it past TPTB to have Kirsty's ex and his brother turn out to be Sharon's brothers.

I don't see how Letitia Dean is to blame.

Her acting is pretty much no different to her previous stints. Just the stories are crap.

There has been a total disrespect to the character by the existing band of writers. Unlike Shane Richie who thinks he is bigger than EE Letitia has probarly had a quiet word with the TPTB that she is unhappy with the way Sharon has been written and they have had to listen to her as they don't want to lose her...

In all honesty I really think EE needs a refresh. The characters and the storylines just seem so stale, I think getting rid of Jack and Tanya will improve the show and a new family is long overdue.

With Sharon, I think they need to keep her on her own at the minute. Getting her back with Phil was just so rehashed nobody wanted it and everybody expected it, I think Sharon needs to be on her own - it's obvious she goes from man to man to find security, a mental health issue could be good to cover.

It seems Letita isn't happy either. Was she expecting too much? Or does she just love to moan?

Leitita realises where her bread is buttered and the fact is that is with EE...

She has never slagged the show off so she was not moaning, just stating a fact that she is unhappy with the writing for Sharon..

Can someone point out to me where Letitia specifically says she isn’t happy? From what I gather she mentions in an interview that she is taking a short break and hope Sharon comes back stronger. Hardly saying that she is unhappy. I sometimes think people read between the lines too much and make up quotes to suit their argument. There’s nothing wrong with Letitia saying she hopes Sharon sorts out her problems – who wouldn’t want that for their character?

This. All of this.

If someone can provide us with a quote where Leitia specifically states she is unhappy then feel free to do so. Until then, don't make stuff up.

I think Leitita knows Sharon better than any of us- the direction of her character on her return has been badly constructed that is for sure.

Well said. Personally I don't like Sharon and the way she treats Lola, telling her not to go up to Lexi, is wrong.

eastenders is a soap, and sharon needed to come back on a high, not like this wet lettuce type she is now,

tragic blonde maybe, but she should have come back taken the vic and rode out the storm that is this dull period of ee history,

I think a lot of the problem lies in how they promoted Sharon's return. They hyped it up massively, ("there's a storm coming") suggesting Sharon was about to shake things up in the Square, reclaim the Vic, you name it. Which, being a huge Sharon fan, would have been excellent. The Queen of the Vic back in her rightful place. So inevitably it was a total let down when she came back an emotional wreck.

But she's come back totally different to her previous stints - desperate, tragic, needy, manipulative. It's not the same Sharon at all. They need to fix her, and soon.
