I just realised that I haven't seen many mainland Chinese films and would like some recs. Any genre is fine.

No Hong Kong films and no martial arts films, please. I'm not that keen on historical films either, but will watch if it's exceptional.

I thought Zhou Yu's Train (2002) was a nice romantic mood film with some beautiful images. And the eternally youthful beauty Gong Li is in it

The Missing Gun (2002) is a something different, a decent black comedy/mystery about a detective who wakes up drunk after his brother wedding, and finds his gun is missing - and he has to work out who took it

Can't really think of any recs for you. My best try are these two.

Red Cliff does have a strong wiff of Martial arts but it's mostly an Historical war movie. Directed by John Woo no less.

Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom flame is a more fun affair movie. Alas it's probably too Martial arts like for you.
