So browsed that Who site GB and the cheek of it. Two users were having a disagreement about rules and whatnot about recons and underwater menace and I just made a passing comment about the site having too many rules and i may as well just stick to digital spy for my doctor who fix and the next thing I know I get banned for some 7 day policy.
Wow that was just plain retarded just because I mentioned this site.

If DS members meet GB members at Norwich conventions are we supposed to start fighting?
I know. At least I don't get banned for asking about what the most stupid spoilers on this site were.
Ban him for being grateful for not being banned I say!!!
Damn, spoke too soon
I use the Spoilers and Speculation threads as an example - it is too easy for users to have the wrong kind of tangent or anecdote. There's no room for proper conversation, and there's too many thread categories which means it isn't long into any conversation before you warrant being directed to somewhere else more relevant.
I wouldn't pass judgement on the individuals who work hard to keep the site afloat, but there is an air of pretentiousness surrounding GB, and it's why I'll stick to DS which is much more liberal with conversations and what not
Such a "behind closed doors" mentality.
In F1 they used to say "the RIGHT crowd, and no crowding"
They don't want the riff raff in there and they certainly don't want us common folk wandering in, reading a few threads and thinking it might be a nice place to park for a while. Oh no.
Elitism of the highest order.
Never been tempted to join myself. I'm fine being looked down on by those type of people, mainly because the type of person who has to be snobby about looking down on people aren't the type of person I want to spend any of my time on anyway.
This place might just repeat the same 4 arguments over and over ("Well, it's called HAVING AN OPINION, not everyone is going to agree"
"Why have you started this thread? there is an episode discussion thread to post in with everyone else you know!"
"Maybe you were too busy posting about the episode as it was on to actually pay attention to it!" and
"THAT'S A SPOILER!! PUT IT IN TAGS NOW!!" ) but dammit, it's home
The reason you have to register is it keeps the posts from being put on google- they don't want the posts to be searchable from google, because people with sensitive information about ratings, future dvd releases etc would be less likely to post if they knew it was going on the search engines.
Which is fair enough really.
OK, so it's the prerogative of the moderators as to which threads they sticky. So far so good.
But recently, I have noticed that many of the stickied threads are the ones that were started by the moderator empowered with sticky rights. Even when the topic isn't really deserving of being stickied!
Normally it means the site has bandwidth issues
How does that explain the On The Buses forum?
All the major search engines (and most of the minor ones) will happily respect your wishes when you mark the pages as not to be indexed - so that's a bit of a non-issue.
I suppose they might be concerned with people linking directly to information they want control over.
I agree totally. Their registration process is horrendous. You would think I was trying to register for a mortgage.
Then, when you enter a discussion, it isn't long before the forum police shoot you down. It stiffles any discussion.
An example was the Blu-ray leak last week. People were discussing it on a specific thread and one poster made the point that the Blu-ray release was far too close to the transmission date so, in a way, what happened was inevitable. Cue a response from a moderator saying "this thread is not to discuss release dates". Seriously, WTF!?
EDIT: i read it wrong, it seems by banning you they just proved what you said was true.
no free speech is allowed on that site...
The erratic moderation is my biggest problem with that site, I've been in threads where one moderator deletes a series of posts as being irrelevant, the same moderator then starts contributing irrelevant posts to the thread and a second moderator comes in and closes the whole thing down.
Ultimately it's a 'private' site rather than a commercial enterprise like DS so the administrators can implement whatever restrictions and posting policies they like.....for myself I've found their recent bizarre mass breakdown/hissy fit to be to my advantage as it's driven me to find more palatable alternatives.
'It's full of failed writers, telling successful writers that they don't know what their doing.'
I'm only interested in the 'TV ratings' thread over there...
you if uttered even the mildlest and most polite
criticism of their production eras.
Ironically, the non-DW forums of Gallifrey Base are supposed to be fine places...
