Philips DVD Recorder help please
Hi All,
I have a Philips DVD recorder. Just recently I have been getting a couple of problems. 1) "Disc Error" and it shows the disc as blank. However eject the disc and insert back in again and all is OK? 2) I record say two programmes. Always make sure to select a spare space for it to record the second one, however it now always seems to record over the first one I recorder? Bothe the above problems have onlt recently starting happening. Any help please

My Phillips DVR80 just fell to pieces after a year, same problems, no disc messages, every now and then I could get it to read a +RW and record something on it but when I put it back into the player it read it as a blank disc. The menus also jumped back and forth when looking at the disc contents. You could try downloading any updated firmware from Phillips for your model - or email them for a CD, which is a lot easier than having to unzip and burn the CD yourself from the file.
http://www.reviewcentre.com/fi51-brand-Philips.html Here's some equally peeved off phillips owners. I have a Sony 510 now, but I kept my R80 just in case I manage to update it and make it work. Great quality when it did and I loved that red band on the display when it was recording.

Although there are still a few stragglers coming in late, most Philips dvdr owners have already dumped them and moved to better makes.
This problem has been ongoing for 3 years. I though everyone had wised up by now. Cut your losses and move onto better things. Its probably no consolation to know that you are one among thousands who fell into the Philips trap. But once bitten........ |

You say I can update the firmware, sorry but how do I do that? Have you got an email address where I can get a CD from them? and then how do I do the update? Sorry, but really am not sure about all this.

Find your model number and click on the drivers and software link on the left. Use the email link to ask for a CD, instructions are on the disk, just follow them. You just have to put it in the player and it does the rest. |

If the firmware update does actually make things work again, previous users experience shows that it will be temporary at best.

OMG! There's something going on!! I have a Philips DVDR 70 and just lately it's refused point blank to play any of the Philips DVD+R's I've recorded on it! Discs recorded elsewhere are fine and it hasn't affected my own recordings on DVD+RW (yet, gulp!) but I couldn't understand why whenever I put in one of my DVD+R's it just made noises as if it was trying to read the contents and then spat out the disc. No 'Error' message or anything! So, can it all be sorted out with one of these things from Philips? (Also, does anyone know - if you don't actually Finalise a DVD+R.. does it stop working at any point?)

You may find you can't finalise them on other makes of recorder, I think that's what happened to me when I put one in my new Sony recorder. If you mean wear out physically, they should last the same as any other. |

Philips DVDR
My Philips DVDR800 gave problems, but was OK after it had been back under guarantee. I would hesitate about any other Philips DVDR though.

The 8** series were abysmal, and every unit was faulty.
Despite claims from Philip lovers, subsequent ranges were also problematic, although they do tend to go for much longer than the early ones. But they all seem to go wrong after a year or two. |

I know I am tempting fate, but my Philips DVDR is working perfectly, especially after updating the firmware.
I have been lucky though, and wouldn't buy Philips again |

My PYE recorder is supposedly a re-branded Philips. I have had problems with some discs made on the PC, but reding the manual, using the keypad on the remote enables playback!
