But I'll give this lot a listen anyway, there's some acts in here I'm not familiar with and I've no problem with using things like this as a way of discovering interesting music that might otherwise have passed me by.
I think thats the best way to look at it & use it give a listen and see if anyone like that may have past you by otherwise

Oops, I should have scrolled down before posting mine.

Anyway......

Who the hell votes for these things?

A bigger load of shite I have rarely encountered.

Ahem...

The Pundits:

...Robert Copsey - Music Editor, Digital Spy...

Luke Sital-Singh, Royal Blood or Say Lou Lou for me, I think. As for my predictions, 0 out of 3 ain't bad, as Meatloaf so nearly sang.

Here's a few alternative lists for people who like to seek out new music (and would like to hear more bands than the BBC list was able to provide):

The UK Blog Sound of 2014 (created by 59 UK music bloggers).

Pips Tips 2014 (a dozen bands to listen out for from Andy Von Pip, including quite a few young British bands).

I find the whole concept of 170 "tastemakers" deciding what I should like pretentious in the extreme.

Especially as those "tastemakers" will have absolutely no concept or idea of the genres I like, so the best of those bands will never make the list no matter how good they are.
I totally agree. It's like they're trying to homogenise music & it annoys me, as if they're trying to say, 'You WILL like this band/singer'. Bah!

Sampha should have walked this. By far the best on the list!

The shortlist has been a bit predictable so far...(Although I love BANKS and Sampha), I would love it if Jungle or FKA Twigs scooped number one and shocked everyone but I'm pretty sure the winner will be Sam Smith!

Have checked out the Sound of.... polls over the last few years have no urge to check it out at all this year. Not into this 'supposed' new in thing - 'homogenised' solo singer / electro / R&B - which is heavy 'over represented' in this poll having read through the descriptions of the artists.Have such a negative attitude towards all these 'best new thing' poll now that I am finding it much harder to actually listen to any of it - which as a music fan l am slightly guilty of admitting. You should always give new music a try.Feel I know what they are going to sound like before I listen to it though.

This type of music seems to be a niche market thing to me - but there seems a push by the 'commercially interested' that all of us should like it.The yoof don't seem to be supporting this 'new in thing' either - seems to get more support from the 30 somethings more than anything.

The most predictable shortlist ever. Have to agree with others that this poll has become far too samey in recent years. It's never really been very significant anyway but it would still be nice to see more variety and less predictable choices. We really don't need Sam Smith to win this poll to know he's going to f***ing everywhere this year.

i don't think I like the idea of an award for not achieving anything other than attending praise from Brit school or labels for having high expectations - it smells of nepotism.

I thought I'd say my opinion on this very quickly. Sam, to me, is the best male vocalist to come out of Britain in years. I mean we have singers like John Newman, Paolo Nutini etc. who are obviously amazing too. But Sam brings so much more emotion and a real impact when he sings, which only singers like Adele and Emeli Sande have. So I think his year is going to be amazing!

Also happy that Ella and George Ezra got recognised, they're both awesome too! Although I wish Say Lou Lou was featured in the top 5 too. All the songs from them I've heard so far, like Julian, Better in the Dark and Maybe You, have been brilliant!
