she has an unusual voice which i like but her lyrics make me cringe, full of clichés and it all come over a bit fake if that makes any sense.

still like a few of her songs, shades of cool if my favourite of the new ones i've heard

The James Bond producers MUST get her to do the theme for the next film.

So she's only sold 20k in the UK midweeks so far....not gonna lie that I'm really disappointed with that I hope she can break 100k by the end of the week.

Wow! Its Lana and her Chet Baker lookalike older lover again. Really liked that. I think its the most underrated song on the album. The video is gorgeous. The West Coast video probably didn't quite come off, seemed to be a bit rushed out but this ones back to form. Special effects are really nicely subtly done, great use of colour and the gorgeous photography. She's wearing the dress she wore at one of her tour dates (was it Coachella?) too.

She only sold 20K so far? Mind you that could be really good these days so crap are the sales on albums in this country.

I think she's still on target to be No.1 though isn't she? I believe she is on target in about 60 other countries anyway.

Just researched that 20K sales, that's 20K for Monday only, not including Tuesday as well, don't panic (yet) Makson!

Not entirely sure where the figures are coming from either (just iTunes)? I think its best waiting for the actual proper mid week sales before jumping to snap judgments about how well its actually doing.

If its 20k just for one day her projections will be something like 40 to 45k I would imagine.

However its been months since I followed sales so I'm not really sure how much things are selling these days. So in turn have no idea if that's now good or bad.

Her new sound isn't that much beloved in Europe, hence the sicnificant lower review ratings in the UK.

Also lack of promo by now but with Glastonbury and BBC radio 1 promo, Ultra will do quite good.

And if she "only" sells 600k it would be quite a success, probably only Ella Henderson and Emeli Sande can sell more with a 2014 release.

600k? what in a week or overall? its rare for anyone to hit 80k first week let alone 600k

Anyway Lana is on course of a number 1 album. Apparently the sales on Monday were 22k

No, I meant overall sales in the UK, I think BTD is about 1 million, so 600k wouldn't be bad.

I'm going to attempt to rank the songs. I think I've listened to the album enough to give this a decent go now, some quick write-ups don't expect them to be well written as I'm doing this in my 30 minute dinnerbreak at work!

The Duds.....

15. Guns & Roses - Pretty boring and monotone, doesn't really do or go anywhere. On saying that I'd still rate this above at least 5 songs on BTD/Paradise.

14. The Other Woman - While this does continue the theme of the album, ending the album on a cover seems odd. As for the song it's to Jazz oriented for me.

13. Shades of Cool - Now this has been confirmed as the next single I'm not surprised. Simply put this is a 'not for me (Clive)' song. I'm just not keen on big singing voice songs.

The Ok's.

12. Is This Happiness - Fine for what it is, a bonus iTunes track (or in old money a B-side track).

11 & 10. Pretty When You Cry/Money, Power, Glory - I've put these two together as that is the major problem with them together they make for a mid section lull. Neither are bad (or particularly good) songs.

9. Black Beauty - There seems to be a lot of hype about this song on this thread, I don't really see it myself, decent track but like the previous two songs tends to get lost and blend it to much on the album.

The Good.

8. Florida Kilos - The standout track of the bonus songs, I'd have like to have seem this on the main album (replacing Pretty Cry) because it offers a different style/tempo.

7. West Coast - Hearing the album in full I can see why this was the first single now. It's a good song and one of the more immediate songs.

6. Sad Girl - On first couple of plays this song stood out as maybe the best track - after repeated plays I've realised it's the beautiful chorus that really stands out. The verves are actually nothing special.

The Great.

5. ****ed My Way To The Top - A Garbage song, Garbage the band that is. This reminds me a lot of Shirley Mansons troopers. It's a great song and kicks the second half of the album back to life after the mid section lull.

4. Ultraviolence - The title track is a great track and bound to cause a up roar due to it's lyrical content, but forget that and just enjoy it.

3. Old Money - This song is a really beauty and should in my opinion be the real album closer, Lana has never sounded so fragile.

2. Cruel World - It's bold to start a commercial album with a song over six and a half minutes long, but it's a real stunner - lots of Mazzy Star comparison in the reviews I've seen. Personally I think this blows anything Mazzy Star had ever done out of the water.

1. Brooklyn Baby - Lana's new masterpiece to go side by side with Videogames and Ride - the guitar stumming is infectious - then the du, du, du's kick in. Lyrically this is far and away my favourite Lana song, it sounds like she just taking the piss.

Someone on this thread said the album sounds like 'The National' and I'd agree - 'The National' via the pen of Shirley Manson...............Listen to Garbages 'Cup of Coffee' and tell me it wouldn't fit on this album!

^ I agree. I'm not fond of 'The Other Woman' really and I would prefer the album to stop at Old Money, which is beautiful.

Money, Power, Glory has been in my head for most of the day but I'm not sure I like it. The chorus sounds a bit whiney.

The thing that struck me yesterday whilst I was listening to it was how much I wanted to change the order of the songs...

Brooklyn Baby does has some very nicely played guitar on it. Kinda reminds me of John Fruciante era Red Hot Chilli Peppers, he played some lovely sun drenched melodic melancholy guitar on some of their greatest hits. Dan Auerbach deserves a lot of credit for both his production and playing on the album.

Oh and suppose I might as well mention this: Lana causes controversy (well what else, she's soooo good at it) over getting "shot" in her Shades of Cool video shocker:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz...h-comment.html

God bless the Daily Mail for over exaggerate these things. I thought it was just a Bond opening credits style shot of love through the heart myself rather than Lana on a death wish. All good publicity mind, gotta be worth a few extra sales of the record. Thanks Daily Mail people !

And oh just have to add Cruel World is just gloriously epic way to start the album and yeah I think its way better than Mazzy Star (no offense Mazzy Star if you're out there)!

Really impresses me that it was a writing collaboration between Lana and her live show guitarist Blake Sanderson too. Eat that people who say she's reliant on big name songwriters!

Can't stop listening to Sad girl
So raw and sad

Rumor has it, it is about a seven year affair she had with a married label exec.

His money on the side, money on the side
Makes me so sad, girl

I thought Sad Girl was meant to be about a prostitute who is falling in love with a customer. Hence the money on the side. I love analysing her songs like this.

Nice write up Rocketpop. I don't agree with all of it of course but I am with you that Florida Kilo should be on the main record. Check out the demo of Black Beauty on YouTube to see why we hyped it btw! Also, I'm curious as to what tracks on Born To Die you really disliked.

Yeah this is the thing with Lana, whilst all the press babble on about her playing a "character" its interesting to try and pick apart what the real truth of these lyrics are. She talked about this affair a few times, I think she's drip feeding bits about it every time telling more of the story. Certainly colourful topic for inspiration and if its all true she's incredibly honest and really does lay herself bare in these songs.

And typo alert on my last post its Blake Stranathan (d'oh Sorry Blake)!

At the risk of being set on fire by Dragon's breath...

National Anthem & Lolita - I absolutely detest both these songs. Nat Ant in particular! It just feels like something Rihanna would sing, complete with a lyric set aside for rent a rapped 'featuring' section (Ooh, yeah, baby, bow down, Making me so wild now etc). I hate the lyrics - I guess they are supposed to be tongue in cheek, but they don't come across that way at all. I also hate the way she drags out the word 'ovation' (Oo-va-chien) when she sings 'Give me a standing ovation'. Lolita is just another song that sounds like it was written for a completely different artist before Lana recorded it.

Carmen - This song is just a total mess, unlike the above songs It just sound like a proper Lana song, it just flows awfully and the chorus doesn't work for me at all.

Body Electric - Sounds like something thrown together in about 15 minutes.

Then there are a few songs that like Guns & Roses are a bit bland - What Makes Us Girls, Lucky Ones, Burning Desire.

I actually agree with a lot of that in that those are some of the songs I liked least on the album. I'm fine with National Anthem but I dislike Carmen and really don't like Lolita. Lucky ones is ok but I'm not big on Million Dollar Man. It's rather meh, like Pretty When I Cry on this new record.

I'll spare you the Dragon's fire...I must be mellowing with age even though you have just dissed all my fave Lana songs ...and just suggest... did you ever see/hear the live or demo versions of the Born to Die tracks that she did? I think you might have enjoyed them more as like Ultraviolence its all proper instrumentation rather than electronica and samples.

I know Blue Jeans isn't on your list, but this version is so god darned beautiful I'll link it again:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkJs1jhKhq4

Could listen to that all day...

No "Boo-yah baby bow down mak-ing me say wow now," just Lana singing the chorus beautifully on the live version of National Anthem (the perfect way to end her shows).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDYyVLhSz2k

Could listen to that all day too...

Body Electric-love it! Lana's most Kurt Cobain type song IMO. There are actually 3 versions of the song. The original dark moody live version which I believe is in C# minor (so its dark and sad):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nu6scvvpUk

And then on the album they gave it a key change to C# major. A controversial change as it of course makes it all happy and bouncy. Still good IMO, I quite like the Bond guitars on it, but some of the fans thought it ruined it. Did the record company order her to brighten it up? Who knows?

Then on the Paradise tour she hit us with a 3rd version with a further spin on it to make it into a dark eastern sounding riff:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QXgxvtjsbw

I am greedy and I actual love all 3 different versions, but I bet you'll still say you like none of them eh?

Lolita first appeared on the Lizzy Grant album and was quite different to the version on Born to Die which sounded like Britney on hard drugs.

As for the comments on Carmen....I'll just repeat I wish Digital Spy had face palm smilies. I'll make do with a to show I have done this in good humour!

My favorites songs from the album are, atm:
- Ultraviolence
- Brooklyn Baby - The last chorus with the man's voice under Lana's is just great.
- West Coast - The most immediate song on the album, I think.
- Money Power Glory

I think Born To Die will still be the better Lana album to me, but I love the production on this album, I feel the progress. I just miss the strings-heavy thing she did before.
