Very sad and shocked about this. I know Sarah Greene had lost both her parents within the past few years as well.

That's quite a shock. Still a relatively young bloke.

Incredibly sad news for Sarah and thoughts are with her.

Ah, really sad to hear this news about Mike. Loved to wake up to his Capital Radio show and even chatted to him once, way back in 1981, when he ran a poem contest about the woes of Barnehurst to Blackfriars commuters and the 8.14 train that never ran!

    RIP.

Yikes, haven't seen Ghostwatch in years.

That's when they disappeared under the stairs.

😊 oh those shell suits! Let's hope Sarah will, in time, find great comfort in the knowledge that he made so many smile. So, so sad. 😢

Breaking news on the BBC that Mike Smith has died aged just 59 after complications with Heart Surgery.
Genuinely shocked. Way too young. Condolences to his family and friends.

None of the news reports have mentioned that he also in the 1980s drove in motorsport. He competed in the Touring Car championship for a while.
I'm a HUGE BTCC fan and was so excited that he was racing in Touring Cars, I was a big fan of his and loved listening to the R1 Breakfast show.
Ah that explains it! Was searching my brain for why I associated him with Oulton Park. I remember as a kid getting radio 1 stickers and all sorts from one of the meets. Must have been Touring Cars.
Yeah I'm sure that I got stickers from Brands Hatch back in the day. I *think* he was on the cover of my school options booklet too - would have been around 1987.
    so sad

Yeah, they married not long after the helicopter crash that injured them both.

    Blimey, that is a shock.

He always came across as a very decent chap, and very good at pop entertainment.

Had that look about him that he always looked in his twenties (if that makes sense)

    Thanks for the smiles Mike,

    RIP x

This is really eerie for me because I was watching my DVD of Ghostwatch today, and had a weird thought on how creepy it would be if, after I'd finished the film, I suddenly heard Michael Parkinson had died. And now, only a few hours later, I hear that Mike Smith (who also happened to star in Ghostwatch) has sadly died. It's a real shame but also really creepy for me.

    RIP to the man.

Lol I remember Cheggers tried to knock on his door for Big Breakfast and he got upset and complained and channel 4 said "we are sorry Mike doesn't have a sense of humour".

What a clownshoe. Show some respect. Saying lol is bad enough at any time but saying it on a death thread is so thoughtless.

Such sad news! There was a time when he seemed to be everywhere (tv and radio), he certainly brings to mind a certain period of time in my life. Best wishes to his family and friends.
