Lucky it didn't update automatically like it usually does or there would have been chaos.
It doesn't usually update automatically. If you haven't updated when the update has been out for a few days, it will say something like 'iOS 8.0.1 is available' and give you an option to install or not. If you choose not to, it'll leave a '1' badge on the Settings icon.

Some of the updates in iOS 7 updated automatically on my 5s.
I haven't got time to scroll though everyones posts, but is anyone else having this issue:
Since I downloaded iOS8, whenever someone calls me or facetimes me, my phone rings, however my screen does absolutely nothing! It either just stays off, or stays on the app I'm on! I can't seem to do anything to answer the call, or even see who's calling!

There has definitely not been any automatic updates with iOS, they always need to be confirmed by the user, not even carrier updates will install without a confirmation box being clicked.

No but it does download without permission which is annoying.
Apple advises users to connect their iPhones to a computer with the latest version of iTunes installed and back up their device first.
A file corresponding to either the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus must also be downloaded from the support page, which gives full instructions on how to restore the handset.
Apple warns that the Health app won't work in iOS 8 after these steps, until iOS 8.0.2 is issued.
The company does not specify how users with older iPhones must act to restore their handset.
"We apologise for the great inconvenience experienced by users, and are working around the clock to prepare iOS 8.0.2 with a fix for the issue, and will release it as soon as it is ready in the next few days."
lol Good. Has it fixed the problems accessing photos, Healthkit and other things?
I think it's fixed the problems accessing photos in that apps still saying 'camera roll' now effectively link to the full list of photos rather than just the most recent. And apparently yes, HealthKit works so apps that use it can return to the App Store.
It hasn't fixed the annoying issue of extensions not remembering their positions on the share sheet, or the bug where the status bar doesn't disappear when you make a photo full screen in Messages. It hasn't fixed the scrolling issue for third party keyboards.

Not a good week for Apple is it?
As the old saying goes ... Jobs would never have allowed this mess

A few updates of iOS 7 definitely downloaded without my permission of knowledge.

No signs of an apology though. >:(
Yes IOS7 did do that as well really annoying. I've just had to fill my my iPad up with stuff to stop iOS8 downloading.
Ive got a 5S and i for one am not taking the risk, im staying on 8.0 until 0.2 is out, and even then ill wait a day or two before updating ;-)
Haven't looked very hard for that then. http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-29358986
I read the story on DS which didn't print the apology.
I thought it was "Apple just works". You couldn't make it up!
Lol, last time i backed up my iphone to itunes, i couldn't see what was backed up and the entire thing was wiped!!!
I have it on my iPhone 6. I can confirm that I still have mobile signal and Touch ID!

So I guess we'll be getting 8.0.3 soon.
I wouldn't have expected the first update to fix what are ultimately fairly minor bugs, but I still hoped!!
I think it's now "Apple. What do you want us to fvck up now?"
