The station now appears to be in mono, aligning itself with Absolute 90's. (and of course it's mono on DAB)
They've already relocated to another multiplex which has reduced the national coverage.
Does stereo sound really cost that much?

They are still stereo online and my Sony TV has an Absolute app for this.
Have you only got 1 ear?
Yes, I was just about to comment about Planet Rock being exactly the same & it's been like that for a long time too. Makes me wonder if there's some technical reason for it rather than commercial reason as surely they would know what they're paying for.
😂😂😂😂😂
Ok you may lose listeners , but then they were going to lose them by making the move to D2 in the first place.
I completely agree, in my opinion everything new that launches should now be in DAB+, I know that some people will have to buy new radios but we cannot keep holding on to the past all the time, especially with something like DAB (MPEG2) which is more costly to broadcast, inferior quality & extremely old technology.
They can't move the main Absolute station to D2 unless they launch more transmitters, the rollover of the analogue INR2 licence requires 80%+ DAB coverage.
Even more reason to drop AM?

Why they are holding onto it, is anyone's guess
Would Ofcom bother with re-advertising INR2, a MW only station?
I'm sure Absolute would continue in analogue form in the unconnected ILR licences for London and Birmingham (auto renewed by being on DAB).
but why would I want to chew through data allowance when I don't need to?
It's the cost of the transmission contract that is the bigger liability. I'm sure that will be back-to-back with the licence term.
We may see Bauer not applying for an extension, and the licence naturally expiring on 30/4/18, especially if there are early termination costs in the transmission contract or they would get a 'black mark' against their name for handing back their licence to OFCOM early.
If this isn't trolling then I don't know how you can claim this.. Each to her own however why would music recorded in stereo sound better in mono?
This at a time where Bauer are clearly using less than whatever the reserved capacity is (now only using 80kbps when in the past Absolute has been 128kbps) and there is spare capacity on the mux for commercial purchase anyway....
OFCOM have clearly paid a consultant a lot of money in an attempt to extract money from the licence holders for something that really holds little value anymore in the digital age. Apart from Classic FM why should they pay over the odds for the honour of an INR licence when they can just buy available commercial capacity that is ready & waiting?
Mono gives a strong, punchy sound, IMHO.
