He is definitely coming out of this looking very bad. Maybe he has huge money worries that we're unaware of (there was an article recently about him trying to sell his house and having to drop the price), so his decision might be prompted by desperation rather than greed.

    Disapointed with Pauls decision.

It makes him look as greedy as channel 4.

Out of the four I suspect he pulled in the least ratings and came across as ascerbic and dislikeable.

No surprise he went straight to the Ch4 trough though.

I saw some of his non bake off shows, and although they were good, he was more aggressive and dismissive of other people on his shows.

The shows he did with Mary Berry, he would treat her a bit like a child who didn't know what she was doing.

Paul Hollywood has definitely been softened by Bake Off, which makes him more acceptable. But there is none of Paul Hollywood's DNA in the BBC's bake of, it all comes from Mel and Sue, and Mary Berry.

Sorry Paul, but you are the weakest link....Goodbye.

Coming soon to 2017 "The Grand Baking Tour"! ;):D

I was going to make a joke about Clarkson joining the team to replace Paul but seriously James Martin is free and the BBC do want to keep him happy so he could be a good fit to be part of a replacement GBBO?

Mary Berry was a major part of the show so it won't be the same without her. I suppose Ch 4 will find someone to replace her, someone they hope has chemistry with Hollywood. The show may not do as well on 4. Watch those ratings drop. :D

If she's young, brunette and pretty that is a distinct possibility. :p

A baking tour isn't such a bad idea, but you would have to set the kitchens up which would be a huge extra expense.

I think there must be a large community hall somewhere in the UK that was used by the Women's Institute in the second World War, or something like that....If I was the BBC I'd replace the tent with that, and start bake off again.

But a new unknown baker would be required to replace Paul Hollywood.....and then Mel and Sue could gently take the mickey out of him, as the new boy.

But as a PSB and given the popularity of the original show...I think the BBC has to be thinking about creating a replacement show.

One good thing about 3 out of 4 presenters/judges leaving...is that the internationally disgraced businessman, Rupert Murdoch is not a happy bunny....What's the point of buying these indy production companies, if the spanner you deliberately throw into the works, just flies back and hits you on your Gollum shaped head?

How are Channel 4 'greedy'? It's them who are spending the money.

They are set to make £80 million alone from advertising so this show pays for itself.

Yes, with a bit of imagination the BBC should be able to come up with a refreshed Bake Off that still retains the old fashioned quality that has made it so popular. The technical round, for instance, could be replaced with a challenge that involves making a traditional cake in the traditional way, using no electric mixers, processors, thermometers etc.

It's really just the tent and the showstopper, technical, signature titles of each challenge that have been sold. And both of those can be easily replaces (as can Paul Hollywood).

Set it in a nice old county manor, maybe a large orangey? with good veiws over the the grounds and with the judges cut away pieces in a library/drawing room (I know at the beginning the did move the tent around to different locations but the "tour" part was a reference to the new but not Top Gear).

I was hoping that there would be a cooling off clause that would enable C4 to drop Bake Off and everything would revert back to the BBC but I keep on forgetting that the B:oST:oRD known as Murdoch owns a large part of Love Productions so anything which hurts him is always great! (For too long governments have allowed him to create a monoploy over here we do not want it to end up like the power he controls in the US.)

I know she's got some existing deal with LP but how about the Beeb getting Nadiya to replace Paul, make an all female BBC (British Baking Competition) with Mary and M&S? Granted she's not got the experience Hollywood has or the profile but there's a helluva lot of good will towards her so maybe people wouldn't mind if it means we can have something akin to GBBO as it stands? Just a thought....

I do hope they come up with something gbbo-ish with Mary and Mel and Sue but I'm not sure about Nadiya as a replacement for Paul. I think I'd prefer someone with no previous link to gbbo or it would start to feel a bit like a Simon Cowell production!

I like Mary - God knows I've spent enough on her cookery books - and I respect her decision to remain with the BBC; just as I respect Paul's decision to move to channel 4 with the show.

    Why all the angst?

It's a television programme - nothing more, nothing less. They are presenters - nothing more, nothing less.

It's not Armageddon or the start of WW3. Nobody died and much as I admired the GBBO team no one is irreplaceable.

Why is Mary a national treasure? Is it because of her age, her baking skills, her gentility when teamed up with rough diamond Paul? Who can tell.

I do think that GBBO did a lot more for Mary than vice versa. I wish all ex members of the team well; just as I hope the transition to channel 4 works well.

TV thread on a TV forum discussing the highest rating show of the year. What is it you expect people to talk about here if not that?

Yet another conspiracy theory - could be true, could be nonsensical. Nobody knows.

    I wish him luck.

I think Channel 4 have shot themselves in the foot with this deal.

However, I think GBBO was nearing the end of its natural life anyway. There are only so many technical challenges etc you can get people to make before it becomes repetitive and eventually boring.

Don't get be wrong, I love GBBO and have been an avid viewer since the first series. I do however think Channel 4 have bought a lemon (drizzle!) and will come to regret the decision. GBBO worked because of the charm and humour that Mary, Sue, and Mel provided. Paul by himself is fairly charmless really, and it will take a huge amount of effort to find a combination of other people that work in the same way - you need someone homely and gentle like Mary, a 'proper' judge like Paul, and comedians who are able to take the mickey but without it ever being offensive. This is even if the public 'forgive' Channel 4 for poaching the show in the first place.

Really? Ratings for the current series say otherwise. Ratings for the first episode were up on last year.

Only if advertisers see it's worth paying the premium rate C4 will charge if ratings are good. If few watch it they will have to cut the rate.

    ===============================

It was predictable Paul Hollywood would stay on and take the extra money. He has more to lose by leaving the show than the others. He isn't as big a draw on his own.

They will. For the first series anyway.

BBC will just make another Bake Off style show with Mel, Sue, Mary and someone like that French Master Baker Richard Bertinet.
Just wait until after C4 airs their new GBBO show and then the BBC can show theirs. They could base it on something like the Great British Menu.

I imagine the BBC are already looking into the legal loopholes for this as we speak, they still have all the major players that made the GBBO a success. So they have the the formula.

It would certainly beat the Channel 4's version, at a fraction of the cost.

How much money would it cost to rent a tent in the middle of a field? a few baking materials,.. a proper BBC led show.

They could keep away from bread as that was Hollywood's specialisation and probably not the most popular or interesting part of the programme. Go exclusively for making cakes and avoid the use of the work 'bake'.
