I think there were two things that went wrong with Shayne Ward and they are both related.
Shayne didn't write his own material. He was dependant on song writers and so therefore dependant on his musical direction. Westlife were big at the time and Louis probably had a lot of Westlife-type songs to hand. It had worked before - Will Young's first single was a Westlife cover/reject.
I think the other thing was Steve Brookstein-related. Brookstein had started kicking off about the show and Simon and Shayne had to prove he wasn't going to be anohter 'Steve' so he towed the line and did as he was told. He bigged up the XF at every opportunity.
I think that is what is wrong with a lot of these winners - they are purely sold as interpretive singers, and are at the mercy of the mentor who will pigeonhole them.
Will Young of Pop Idol (and I am not particularly a fan), proved that he could do much more by writing a lot of his second album, and starring in musicals and also in TV dramas - hence he proved he had a bit of the X Factor about him. You could argue Girls Aloud bucked that argument - but I think they filled a gap in the market in the UK at the time.
James really needs to cut down the attitude. He'll probably be dropped after his debut album fails to set the charts alight...
Huh? James saying his New Years resolutions is to give up alcohol and never argue with a man is sequins that's an attitude problem?
James didn't say it was about Shayne. I said maybe it was, for all we know James might have went to see a cabaret act who told him pink wasn't his colour or something. It was a bit of speculation, nothing to suggest it was noting Shaynes advice.
I remember him performing his, then, new single on X Factor back when Cheryl was on the panel and thinking how long ago it was since he won. You really can't bounce back from your career being shelved for so long as he proved. Same with Leona.
The next time an XF act's album is delayed you'll realise that the pop dumper is not far off.
The problem is some of the contestants come off X Factor and expect to sell well what ever album they release. James has sold really well with his first single but this is off the back of the X Factor.
What will his album be like and will it sell as well without the X Factor momentum behind it? Even Rylan is still on the X Factor wave himself.

Where'd he say that! I'm impressed...

I like Shayne too, he seems like a good guy.
He's also incredibly cute, I will always hate Simon for what he did to both him and Matt Cardle. At least that cutie Olly Murs is doing well.
