Am i alone in hating my work's Christmas do? It's in a dreary hotel every year, poor quality, mass produced food as they are catering for so many of us and worse of all, the staff act like they haven't seen alcohol all year!

I hate the kind of forced atmosphere that exists at these events.
As I work in the public sector we - despite anything you read in the Daily Heil or Di'ly Express - not only have to pay for it, but do it in our own time. So there's an element of choice and democracy in the selection of venues BUT it does tend to be the same as everywhere else. As most of us don't live in the area, there's a limit on the amount of alcohol one can consume and get home safely.

i'm not going - i used to go regularly to show my face and try and show a bit of enthusiasm but at my age i cant be bothered anymore and some of them are snakes in the grass always backbiting about each other and then going out with each other:eek:

    welcome to the real world

I'm a qualified Nursery Nurse who's worked in nursery classes for 20 years. I'm well grounded...can't be anything else on my salary.

Enjoy your bonuses and parties and keep on bashing the low income public sector workers...instead of aiming your vitriol at the bankers and governments who've caused this unholy mess. ;)

Makes me realise how lucky I am to work with a team who are friendly and supportive.

Same here. I thought my earlier post about a previous company trying to force me to attend their stupid party would be quite an exceptional case, but looking at some of the replies on here it looks like it might not be.

I think it's extremely rude to try and drag your employees to a non-work related event they do not want to attend in the first place. What a way to create resentment.

I'd much rather go to the pub with my team mates (we're all good friends), and any bitchy troublemakers or obnoxious characters are simply not invited.
Who cares for a lavish Hilton hotel/3 course meal when you're gonna be bored to tears because of the tedious company you're in. Urgh. I'd rather sit at home and watch East Enders!

We get a £9 (used to be £10, but was reduced last year because of spending cuts) per head allowance towards whatever we choose to do. Last year we went to a country pub with a skittle alley and they put on a brilliant hot buffet lunch for the £9 each and we had a great laugh, so we're going there again.

I really want to go to my mate's husband's firm's do though. Apart from the fact that it's a slap-up black-tie dinner in a posh hotel, the woman who's been trying to get off with my mate's husband for the last year will be the there. Last weekend, she got bladdered and posted vile things on my mate's FB page. When my mate has had more than 2 glasses of anything alcoholic she loses all inhibitions and will have a go at anyone.

Now that promises to be an exciting evening!

I've been to some fantastic works Xmas parties over the years, in fact works parties in general. Last year's Xmas party had CeeLo Green who was great. I think it was Good Charlotte the year before that, I don't know who's playing this year.

Who expects you to have strict plans? Just put your foot down and say you're not going to the party.

Friends and family who should know better! They all know my feelings about New Year's Eve parties - pretty much everything you expressed about the one you were dragged along to. Equally they also know that when I've said 'no' in one of my insistent tones of voice, which I have done, that it'll be a cold day in Hell before I change my mind.

For some reason they think if I were to spend the night on my own (which is unlikely because I'll end up getting invited over to a friend's house) it would be some tragedy. To be honest I spent most of last year's New Year's Eve on my own before going over to visit other family members and it was bliss. It was the first night over the festive period I had to myself.

I don't think it will get mentioned again though because the last time I had the 'there's still time to change your mind' spiel, I glared at the friend who said it.

I've never been, I only socialise with people I like.
I take it your most satisfied where you are now career wise

From what i've gathered now in these threads after seeing a few, it seems many people are a bunch of miserable sods who hate everyone they work with

I wish I could say the same about the people at the Marks and Spencers branch I work at but they're all jolly nice fellows, and we have a rawkus when we get ratarsed down the local

As a rule I normally enjoy works xmas parties, If I didnt I just wouldnt go - I didnt go to the main xmas do this year as I just couldnt be bothered with it all, instead my team and a couple of other people we invited went out for a nice meal and a few (well probably more thank a few :p) drinks, was a great night.
