Kerrang Radio

Really sad to read Kerrang is closing in the Midlands and moving to London. Like my new rock and dont have a digital radio in the car. Dont understand this decision but i guess its a financial one? Those guys make me and my kids laugh every day. Not into classic rock to be honest and theres nothing else i would want to listen to around here.

I called the station today and apparently they are all losing their jobs because of this. So sad.

Kerrang went down hill slowly since it had been taken over a few years ago. The dire 'imaging' (Spoken jingles) hasn't helped Kerrang whatsoever which was a complete turn off for many people I knew that listened to Kerrang.

Yet...the person behind the 'imaging' was an actual presenter on Kerrang and has recorded imaging for 'Free Radio' too...

I think that was a contribution to a very high percentage of listener loss.

There is nothing worse than 'annoying' radio - and Kerrang was just that with it's 'yobbish' imaging pumped out several times an hour of which was annoying to the point of 'switching off'

I loved Kerrang for the first 3-4 years...it was a great station... but they have shot themselves in the foot after the changes were made.

Personally I prefer 'Planet Rock' to Kerrang.

Planetrock is not just classic rock.

The advertising revenue and COI advertising on all stations has fallen and as Southcity said in another thread the Birmingham Kerrang station has been running at a loss so looks like this move was inevitable as the radio industry has been going through a lot of consilidation, Bauer are ay commercial company which has to make a profit to exist. But sad to see jobs lost and hope those affected will find new jobs.
But looks like Paul Anthony the Planetrock breakfast presenter started at Signal so will know the Midlands area.

By keeping Kerrang on DAB and Freeview in many places and therefore promoting digital radio especially low cost car DAB sets are now on sale, and in new cars as standard, might have helped Bauer get this approved.

Of course you're assuming that Paul Anthony will stay at Planet Rock. The station has a strong lineup of famous and popular presenters but in my view breakfast is very weak.

Breakfast is better than when it was voicetracked Alice Cooper now in a more suitable late night slot.
Will be interesting to see if Paul Anthony with his Midlands links stays on breakfast as they have brought a new young presenter in for the evenings?
Noticed on mediauk a link to an interesting blog by a former head of music at BRMB

Dont know what station youre listening to but thats not the one i listen to every day. Their imaging producer is a scottish guy called Gordon Lundy and to my knowledge hes never worked for Free Radio.

Me and my kids love Kerrang and dont find it annoying. Its a brilliant listen and we will miss it. The fact its won loads of awards and many of my work colleagues listen is enough for me.

Sad to hear of the job losses and hope they all find work. I met a couple of them at an event last year and they seemed like really nice guys.

Bauer is all about brand and Kerrang! Radio didn't really fit with the branding for its magazine of the same name. You wouldn't catch the mag featuring Oasis. However, playing the music featured in the mag all the time would have been an early death nell regarding advertising.

Moving Kerrang! to DAB (as we are led to believe) will give them a chance to play brand-associated music with the station being "propped" up by revenue from Bauer's portfolio.

I think this is good news, there were too many rock stations. Kerrang, Planet Rock, Absolute Classic Rock , Real XS, teamrock- they can't all survive.

A single station might do. Let the new music baton pass to XFM- it's a shame there is no space for them on FM in the West Midlands....

I agree with that, but I just hope that if Bauer do acquire Absolute they don't close down 1 Golden Square and put Planet Rock on 105.8 & 1215AM.

That would be a sad day for radio if that happens, as Absolute have invested in some really good programming in the last five years, not just classic rock.

But out of all of those there is only one that appears on a normal radio - in fm ( in the midlands) and thats Kerrang 105.2

If planet rock does appear on 105.2, and all this is not just some publicity stunt ( in the vein of the BBC shutting down 6 music) hopefly it will adopt the playlist of Kerrang, and feature modern artisits as well as a few indie type artists - coldplay/oasis/sterophoics /kaiser chiefs/the bravery and so on.

If they DO go down the coldplay/kaiser chiefs route then this is one listener they will have lost, that was the reason i stopped listening to Kerrang! Every time i put it on they were playing those, Oasis or the Fratellis...

Give Team Rock Radio a listen, they'd never play the shite you've mentioned.

When Kerrang! 105.2 started, Kerrang! Radio was still a separate station on DAB. You could listen to both online and Kerrang! Radio had a different less mainstream playlist. If that is what they go back to on DAB, the target audience may be happier with a less mainstream Kerrang.

Tried it -far too heavy/too much metal for my tastes - i like the classic/melodic/AOR type bands ie. Whitesnake, Leppard, Thunder, Little Angels, SKIN, FM etc etc

Fair comment, but don't write it off until programs start properly, The Classic Rock Magazine show every evening may be just to your taste.

To be honest the comment from Johnny Meyers about if there were more than 2 songs he knew every hour he would be asking questions, wrote it off for me. Although i like to hear new bands, i like more familiarity than 2 songs an hour. I normally listen whilst doing other things and dont like having to keep looking at the display to see what it is im listening to.

At the moment Planet Rock and Real XS answer my needs perfectly but with MXR going off in August, no doubt we will lose Real XS here

If Planet Rock do go indie orientated i will just listen to The Sound from LA online.

Do you have any evidence for this ?

I would expect Absolute Classic Rock would be closed and merged into Planet Rock, but there is still quite a gulf between Planet Rock and the main Absolute channel.

Wouldn't this break the FM/AM simulcast rules (if they still exist)?

In the Midlands you would then have the same station on both 1215KHz and 105.2MHz

Doesn't seem to bother us in London. Probably a good reason to shut down 1215 in those areas.

Would be a shame to see both Kerrang! and Absolute go down the pan, two decent brands replaced by something specialist which (due to its new FM presence) may be forced to water down its format.

I think that can be said about a lot of Bauer brands. For example, there are three Magic services, all with a common name and logo but very different music. Magic TV has little in common with Magic 105.4, which itself operates a different format to Magic AM.

For years Kiss TV stopped playing dance music even though it still featured heavily on the radio station.

With Capital and Heart you know you'll get the same music on the radio and TV channels, but this doesn't seem to be the case with Bauer's radio/tv/magazine brands.

If 1215KHz was shut down in the Midlands it would mean switching off the Droitwich 1215 tx, which of course covers more than the Midlands.

Agree with your comments about replacing two decent brands.

Theres also a hige gulf between Kerrang as it is now on 105.2 and planet Rock.

hopfuly Colonel Ray Freedom will park his tank outside Kerrangs birmingham studios, or move it to a defensive position elsewhere and prevent planet rock invading the transmitter.

I will miss Loz and Keith in the mornings. I've only been listening for a few months after moving to Birmingham, but I've really come to like their breakfast show. :(
